If not optically identical, it's not far off:
I'd like to shoot the two side-by-side to see what the differences are. I did that with a clean Summar and 50/1.9 Serenar (again, pretty close in design), and the Summar was noticeably better towards the corners and edges, but not enough that most people would spot any difference in regular use. With the 50/3.5 Serenar and 50mm Elmar, it's even closer still.
