What would you choose ?

Hello All.

As with many posts here @ RFF, I appear to be one of many “on-the bubble” RF shoppers. Last week I received some great guidance which has brought me to the following decision:
I’m headed toward a M6…and one lens, to get me started; while trying to keep the whole rig to no more than $2k.
Looks to be doable. There is a local camera shop that I have a lot of confidence in and, unless something pops up here soon… will likely head to there.

So; if you had choose 1 lens to get started*….. and be somewhat budget conscious at the same time ( I don’t mind buying used.. so long as it from a reputable place) what’s the consensus from the team?
The new VC 35/1.4 sounds interesting.

Thanks.

(* fully recognizing that there are so many variables in asking this question)

Do you want a 35mm lens? What are your criteria for choosing the lens (speed, size, signature, handling, etc...)?

If it was me, I would choose a 50 (either a ZM Planar or a Summicron (IV).) If you are looking for a 35mm lens, I would look for a third version Summicron (the version that came just before the so-called "king of bokeh"). You should be able to put together an M6 + 35 Summicron kit for 2K. The new CV lens sounds interesting. But, without having seen it or any photographs from it, I am not really in a position to recommend it. Good luck.

If you want "the king of bokeh" I will gladily sell you mine, only be warned that the bokeh os just OK, and the lens is just OK, overall an average performer at a premium price.
It must be the most overrated lens ever, I just succumbed the hype.

Yup, 50, 35, fast, slow; so many variables. Once I have this in hand I’ll likely start exploring. For now I’m attempting to do with an M6 what Opportunity and Spirit are doing on Mars; come prepared, land, explore and prepare for the next step.
Fgianni: Thanks: after reading your post I’m ready to head out and buy up all existing stock of the "the king of bokeh." Good insight from a hands-on user – appreciate it.

If you've got that budget, I'd second the M6 proposal, and I'd second the 35. A leica-leica match also makes sense. Depending on condition, you may be able to fit in an M6 (pre TTL) and a 35 Summilux (pre-ASPH) into your budget. I bought this combo a few years back and it was well within your limits.
