what would you do?

If it were me? I'd get a new camera and then take apart the old one to see if I can repair it myself. If you're successful at it, you'll have two usable cameras (or you can sell one) and chances are you may be able to fix any future problems on either body. If you're unsuccessful, you're in better position than what you were in before. You could probably even sell off the jammed R as a parts camera or someone who does know how to fix it will buy it from you.

Im leaning that way Frank. Seeing I think it was my clumsiness that has caused the situation.
Hey, could i buy the R2A and paint in the 2 and a? hmmmmm....

Honestly,

I may do both. If you have the stash to pull off the R2a, then the repair is only another $150, and you don't want your R hanging around un-repaired.

In all seriousness, Im pretty sure Im going to fix it. She bought me this camera about a year ago when I was struggling to pay most of the bills while she was building her business, so I didnt have much left over to spend on myself. So off to Stephen it will go.

cant buy the R2A right off, but will start saving up for it and then have the R as my backup.

I always warp my perspective on these things. The R2a is a $540 nut, so if you have that, then another $150 isn't as bad as having the $150 and needing another $540.

I think my R is the only camera I miss that I have sold.

A gift from your wife must be repaired. It'll cost you even more if you don't ...😀

If it weren't a gift from the wife, I'd say buy the R2a and offer the R here "free to good home."

I hope not to be in your situation once more, in my case the camera (from cameraquest) after a long trip to Spain get jammed the first day after 7 shots...

If it's a present it always will have an added value... even if it is unrepairable (does this verb exist?) it is worth retaining it...

I am going to go against the grain of thought here. For the most part we are users not collectors and unless that camera is a rare collectible repairng it needs hard and long thought. You might have some sentimental value to that camera...alas... I do to mine but I know that my wife has none to the cameras no matter how many pictures she has seen from them or even used. When I repair a camera I weight the cost of the repair to the replacement value of the item. If it is cheaper to replace then replace it I must and not repair. On the other hand if it is cheaper to repair & I have several lenses go with it then I repair. If, on the other hand, I am looking to upgrade...then I have to say good-bye. And, nothing stops you from buying new and keeping the old until more money is available. Good Luck!

When my Olympus 35 RC developed a light leak recently, I decided to spend the money to get it properly CLA'd despite it costing me more than the camera is worth, and despite the fact that I also have a second, spare one 🙂

My reasoning was that I like the camera, carry it with me everywhere, and consistently enjoy using it, so why the hell not? It's come back even better than before and hopefully will still be useable when I'm in my dotage.

Felt the same way about my GSn that i recently had overhauled.

Good Choice...Sentimental Value trumps all...plus the wifey gift thingy...
I have a chrome Nikon F2 that needs new seals and the DP-1 Viewfinder fixed, since I have never used this camera it can sit in the closet for now...see NO sentimental value NO rush to fix...
