What's a good chest harness for skiing?

Put it in a backpack. I Never go more then a stones throw with my camera exposed while skiing unless its perfectly sunny out.

Sorry, no DSLR harness info, but you can avoid breaking ribs in that kinda fall only by 1/being 9 years old again when you can bounce more easily or 2/dressing up like Michelin Man. Downhill or Nordic? I only know downhill skiing in the west.

But: I detached all my ribs in a minor bike fall just a few years ago @age 57. Long recovery. East coast snow is more like concrete than not, and falling downhill on skis not unlike falling off a bike. I'd hate to hit the slope face first with a big camera against my sternum. I might be more inclined to trust my legs with the skiing, pack my poles in a backpack until needed, and carry a camera on a wrist strap, especially if my ribs were more important than the cam. but then I'd also be shooting a smaller cam....

Good luck be safe have fun!

Always used a waist pack rather than a backpack (too hard to access) or a chest strap (fall on face sometimes). Waist pack keeps the camera where your hands are, and your center of gravity low. Mostly, you can either ski or take pictures. X-C is more compatible than downhill.

If you want to find a heavy duty method of carrying something heavy on your chest look into the velcro systems that hold pistols to the chestpiece of tactical vests. These are worn by people who need access to a pistol quickly but also work in tight quarters, like fast-boat crews VBSS personnel in the Navy. I almost got one when I was a photographer in the Navy but it got in the way of both my camera strap and my M-16 strap.

It's velcro, yes but I swear you could be picked up by it, it's that strong. In the event of a tumble, your camera *might* rip off.

Other than that, maybe try getting one of the baby carriers and modifying it to hold a camera.

Go easy, don't punch it through your chest at high speed!

As someone who fell over a lot, while singularly failing to learn how to ski, I think JSU's advice is good. A padded holster should protect the camera from the cold and you from the camera. I also think a waist fitting reduces the chances of you damaging yourself permanently, if the worst comes to the worst.

And how do you avoid breaking your ribs should you fall?

Don't venture above the Bunny Slope, and don't drink more than 3 beers.... 😀

Seriously, if you're worried about falling, you probably will.

I'd go with a fanny pack, but the camera holster sounds interesting. I'll have to look into it.
