Fourteen days ago, on a whim, I bid on a 2.8/50mm Volna-9 macro lens which focuses down to 24cm, or just under ten inchs. I won the auction for about the price of a yuppie lunch, and the lens arrived today without worry or fanfare from the Ukraine, hermetically sealed in an almost indestructable swath of packing material.

Without ado, I mounted it on a Praktiflex FX, focused on the ground glass, and with the lens wide open, ran up and back through the lens' focal range. This is a heck of a hunk of glass, and I can't wait to shoot with it.

What does anybody know about the Volna-9? What can I expect from it? How is it constructed? How does it focus down to 24cm? will it perform well wide open, or does it need to be stopped down?

Any clues will help. Thanks

I have one, too, but don't know a lot about it, and also, haven't used it that much (I don't do a lot of macro stuff); you can find a bit of info here:

http://www.xs4all.nl/~tomtiger/index.html?

- you'll have to find it in the menu there, can't link directly to the correct page!
