What's around for bulk loading?

I personally bulk load 'whatever I can get my hands on'. I have 2 bulk loaders on hand filled with a roll of something all the time. I typically keep color in one and BW in the other if possible.

My current faves are expired Kodak Portra 160NC and Ilford HP5+ 400 for mine, but usually I keep BW Arista EDU Ultra 100 and 400 in the two loaders and shoot color from pre-done cassettes. I just happened to score a bunch of rolls of the expired Portra 160NC so it's been living in my color loader lately.

Without derailing this thread, is this ORWO film something that requires special processing or can you process it in typical BW chemicals (D76 or Diafine) without any problems? I'd never heard of it and your shots above are lovely so I want to try it. I tried some Kodak of some kind in color that required some special steps and it was just too much for me to figure out so I gave up on it. (Does it have a wierd backing? Does it have sprockets?)

No special chemicals needed. As most movie stocks you can use standard black white chemicals, D76 or similar. I mix XX and the Orwo 74 in the same tanks and the same times. It is always a good idea to run personal speed test to compensate for your own metering etc.

For the benefit of UK readers I have just received a quote from the ORWO UK distributor:

N74 100ft/30m £59.52 per roll all taxes and P&P paid
UN54 same £45.86

UK price for 30m of HP5+ is around £60/70 and Tri-X £116.30 !!!!!

Thanks for that Chris.
I know I`ve said it before but at UK prices savings for bulk seem marginal at best.
The price for TriX is just ridiculous.
I have a 100 foot of Legacy in the fridge for when I get the urge.

Legacy pro are gone, probably forever.

Sad news: I just learned, right after loading a roll, that Neopan 400 is discontinued.

Anyone know if Freestyle will get more bulk Legacy 100 anytime soon? In the meantime, I'm off on my way to Glazer's.

Interesting. I did some looking and found folks doing both UN54 and N74+ in Diafine and or D76 with good results.

They didn't have any 100' of the 400 iso version on the site, so I grabbed a roll of the UN54 to try.

Looking forward to trying it out just for the experience. It's one of the reasons I love the bulk loading - I get to try films that I'd otherwise not be able to. 😀

Where, except ebay, can one buy expired colour neg bulk?

Cheers
Philip

I use an Alden 200. I think 70€ sounds a lot for a loader. Check eBay, there's usually a lot of different ones there for far less.

Just had a reply from Orwo dealer N74 iso400 £59.52 and UN 54 iso100 £45.86 including delivery, i might get some UN54 but i can get HP5 for £50 delivered, Has anyone compared HP5 to N74 and is it worth paying the bit extra ?

Estate Auctions, garage sales (if you are lucky), some smaller local camera shops might also carry it. Look around online too, there are often people selling it here and there.

I get most of mine on eBay just because it's there and if you watch carefully you can find some really great stock at great prices that hasn't been "Lomography" and "Lomo" tagged and marked way up.

I haven't tried N74. But given the reputation of HP5, I'd definitely grab HP5 especially when the cost is even lower.
