What's in a name? new Nikkor 1.8/35 SP limited lens...

The new 1.4/50mm Nikkor has settled in with the nick-name 'millennium' to distinguish it from the original early/mid 60s lens issue 'Olympic' version. But we haven't come up with a quick reference name for the reissue of the 50s classic 1.8/35 that comes with the Nikon SP limited set.

Any name makers out there - for fun 😀

I just reread Tale Three: W-NIKKOR 3.5cm f/1.8 at the link above for inspiration, but no luck yet (maybe I should drink some wine, but its just gone past midday in Japan .... still a little early).

Maybe something using the word Lanthanum or the name of the optics designer Mr. Hideo Azuma .... i.e. the "new Azuma"?

Doesn't have the cool sound of "Millenium Nikkor" though :bang:

Just getting going here on a Sunday morning and checking to see if anyone was inspired.

Well... I guess its kind of hard to top 'millennium' or 'Olympic' especially since they are coming from special times/events.

My take so far 🙄 'reissue' just doesn't do it for me, no fun there, sweet and simple 'SP' is just not descriptive enough, '2005' works but when I compare it to 'millennium' it seems only just OK, and naming after the designer Asuma doesn't separate it from the 'original 50s' lens enough.

My own choice at this time isn't perfect either, but its the only one I could think appropriate - 'limited' - as its from the limited edition SP set. Can't say it has the millennium ring to it and it deserves better maybe, but it runs true to the camera/lens name on the boxed set and makes it very different from the 'original' or '50s' 1.8/35 ( since we're starting from 'original/50s' and not 'olympic', I guess I can't expect too much 😉

So... more ideas?

Of the suggestions so far, I like "Limited" the most.

I have another suggestion! How about the "Tochigi 3.5cm f1.8".

The original 3.5cm f1.8 would most certainly have been manufactured at Nikon's Oi Plant near Shinagawa. However, we know for sure that the reissued lens was not manufactured there, but instead was manufactured at Tochigi Nikon in Tochigi Prefecture. The Millenium Nikkor was manufactured there too, but its already got a cool nickname.

it only makes sense to call the lens the 35/1.8 2005

I know the new SP set came out in 2005, but looking over all the literature included and sales promotion pamphlet the only lines that stand out are 'Limited Edition', not a thing about 2005. But like the S3 2000 its taken on the start of production/anouncement year in name. Still the 50 has its own identity 😕

Can't say I've ever liked anything that promotes itself as 'limited', even if it a 'limited production' item, sounds like a badly conceived sales promotion to me. If I didn't have to write 'limited' every time in reference to the lens I'd feel a bit better myself.

But the 'millennium' 50 has such a nice ring to it ! and with the new S3 coming out in 2000 its got a logic to it. Nothing much special about the year 2005 I can think of, so...

So instead of '2005' why don't we call the 35mm Nikkor the 'millennium + 5' 😀

Actually, The name '35/1.8 2005' is not fun, too strict. many peoples want to call their stuff as another sweet and simple nicknames.

How about 'millennium W-nikkor' ?
Ignore 5! it's just a small portion of 2005. (0.25% 😀)
