What's next for Voigtlander?

Given the apparent success of the 25mm/0.95 for m43rds, how long will it take Cosina to offer another m43rds lens? And which Voigtlander lens will they offer next?

(I'm hoping for the 50mm/1.1, the sooner the better.)

I think I saw a picture of that one. It was commissioned by Sony, branded Carl Zeiss, and (probably) made by Cosina. Available this coming year, if the Sony "Roadmap" is to be believed. By the time Sony and Zeiss get their cut, it might more expensive than the .95...

You're confusing "full frame field of view" with focal length. The focal length determines how the image is distorted (or not). The full frame field of view determines how big the subject is in the final image relative to a full frame camera's distance from the subject. So for m43rds, a 25mm lens has a 50mm "full frame field of view" but its still a 25mm lens which provides unflattering portraits.

Zeiss lenses for Sony are made in a Sony factory, rather than Cosina.
 
A 25mm 0.95 isn’t the same as a 50mm 0.95, you have to double the aperture-speed as well. So it’s something like a 50mm 1.8... So, considering depth of field, of course, you get the shutter speeds of a 35mm 0.95-lens.

The focal lenth does not "determine" distortion, and a 25mm lens doesn't deliver "unflattering portraits" either. It's the distance to the subject that causes distortion and shooting at close range does indeed provide unflattering portraits.

Portraits should be taken at 1.5m distance from the subject or more, in order to reproduce faithfully facial features, without any perspective distortion. The focal length of the lens or the size of the film/sensor has no relationship at all to perspective, only camera to subject distance does.

Of course, when shot from the same point, a short focal lens will encompass a wider angle than a long telephoto, but if you crop the picture delivered by the short focal lens, you will get exactly the same image as the one shot with the telephoto.

I just want to support what was written about by Abbazz above. It is indeed the field of view under which we see (or better to say photograph) given object (be it face or building) that dictates the distortion of the object.

Full face shot taken with 50mm on 35 mm film will have the same amount of distortion as it were taken with 25mm lens with m4/3 or 100 mm lens with 6x7 camera.

Now the DOF depends ONLY on the focal length and f/stop. That's why the 25/0.95 has the same DOF as like ~ 50/1.8 on 35mm (linear with focal length conversion which is 2 for m4/3 relative to 35mm)

And the plastic dummies with the ZEISS label at the photokina looked quite huge! (probably Distagon type)

So that would be a chance for Cosina to make a smaller one! (and sharper in the corners than the 35/1.4 FF Nokton is with the APS-C sensor)

Only for DOF and FOV considerations....w/o getting too technical
any f/.95 or f/1.1, NO Matter what the COC is OR the focal length, Is still the f/stop.... it is a fraction of the focal length of [the lens the iris is in]..... so, in a 25mm lens f/1 is a 25mm iris opening, and in a 50mm lens at f/1 is a 50mm iris opening....f= 50/1, f= 25/1 are the fractions.....for f/2 the fraction = 50/2 = 25, or 25/2 = 12.5....Iris opening to achieve the same EV

f/2 = f/2 In light gathering (EV) regardless of the focal length of the lens.... The DOF is different in some cases...just depends on the camera:subject distance... it can be the same or different.

Fireboy and DNG, I think, you just missunderstood me. I know that. I just meant, that a 25mm 0.95 on a µ43 will produce a image looking like 50mm 1.8 on 35mm, both wide opened. Are we d'accord again? 😱 This is always confusing...

So what is Voigtlander going to do?

Just make lens for m43 or are they going to make bodies?

Is the idea of a 35mm frame body dead?

Been working and raising rug rats (and running the hell out of a 5DmkII) and I'm out of the loop.
