Ok, the poll part has mostly failed (perhaps predictably): I've missed some of the most popular options so far, namely Hexar RF and Minolta CLE.

Sorry about M5, was just trying to stir some controversy, since it is so often mentioned as a camera that Leca shouldn't have made 🙂

I've never heard the M5 was the camera that shouldn't have been made. Actually it's even crazier: It's the camera that people quote other people to have said it's the Leica that should never have been made, but the people that say that are actually using the M5 and lovng it. Haven't you noticed this? It's just people quoting other people that quote other people but there's nothing more to it.
the M5 is just different and not a mistake, unlike the people that quote other people that quote other peole want us to believe it was a Leica mistake.
 
I am not too sure I understand the question (why is the M5 there?) but I think the Nikon F2 would have been a great addition to the R-System. At least there was the SL2. I don't miss anything in the M series.

The M5 is considered a "mistake" because Leica sold so few of them. They sat and sat on dealers shelves. Goes to show how profoundly conservative Leica users are. I have two of them, and it is a great camera with the best light meter Leica ever put into its cameras. That's probably why the M8 loads its SD card as if it were a bottom loader film camera. Leica users hate change.

Maybe Leica should try to get back to its roots of innovation it pioneered in the 1920s-1950s.

An M7 and M8 could be retained for conservative high-end purchasers, but the the company could then innovate with an entirely new digital product line in the $1,500 range ... a Barnack-sized cropped-sensor camera with very small, fast interchangeable primes (plus perhaps a small zoom) that mates up with some kind of zooming viewfinder that still incorporates framelines, and (g-d forbid) perhaps some sort of autofocus.

Emphasis is ability to get DSLR-quality photos out of a very small camera that can be as automated or as manual as the user desires.

Marketing ideas: "A new Leica for the next hundred years." "Excellence comes in small packages" "Capture the world in the palm of your hand" "Big pictures from small cameras (wasn't that Barnack's slogan?" A picture of it next to the UR-Leica.

Nahhh. It'll never happen.

Hello, when I look the other day the new olympus E400 it was little as a M but lighter! and if you use a lens adapter with some vintage pancake lens you have a nice combo for low price.
