... pet scenes/pet detection?!? Was looking at dpreview and several compacts now have this feature.
A really useful feature would be a "composition detection" where arrows in the lcd/led tell you by how much to shift the camera to get a proper rule of thirds... or maybe in place of scene modes, a dial that has the following selections: HCB, Elliot Erwitt, Nachtwey, A. Webb, G. Rowell, A. Adams, etc...

Probably pet detection is not a bad idea because for most untrained users with slow P/S pets are just too fast.

Quick shot of anesthetic would be useful to keep pets static while P&S captures a picture of them. That would be called "Wildlife edition"

...although I personally think it is kind of silly, I guess it would attract more than a handful of pet lovers out there...

It is clearly a recognition on the part of the camera makers of the demographic they're targeting with the camera in question. I would also suggest that with megapixels nearly tapped out (apparently) as a 'and that is why we are better' compelling argument, each manufacturer is desperately searching for differentiation. Anything to try to establish a selling point advantage. Perfectly normal.

I guess they already had a sunset mode so a kitten/puppy mode was all they needed to be perfect for a lot of people...

Now RFF members are going to be shy about posting photos of their cats.

Agreed. And I expect it will successfully increase sales with pet lovers.

Just got a roll of negatives back, and I think my camera was stuck in "suck" mode.
