Hey Range, I'm looking at this combo, and was hoping it would work w/o the external finder. Do you use the S2 and the 35mm w/o an external finder? Can you roughly frame 35mm in the stock S2 finder?

I voted Nikon S but for sentimental reasons. In 1972 I bought a nice Nikon S, 50mm f2.0, case and four Nikon cassettes for $100 from Trendon photo in Libertyville Illinois. I was into the Nikon F then but the S was cute. Later in college I used the S in the theater because it was so quiet. It got loaned to a friend whose Petri had died and he came back amazed by the lens. In 1990 I got my first Leica, an M3 and now mostly use a Leica IIIc but I still have that S. It's been a wonderful camera, I also have a Nikon SP but that old Nikon S will always be a favorite. Joe
 
I really love my S2 in original black paint. I use the camera with both the first Nikkor 50mm f/1.4 and the S Skopar 50mm f/2.5, a wonderful small lens with my favorite type of shade.

With more experience I must say I would change my vote. I’ve decided I don’t like the twin viewfinder windows at the back of the camera for different focal length lenses, so I only use the SP with a 50mm lens. I use my S2 for the 35mm lens. The. S2 gets the most use.
 
A few years ago I had interest in using a Nikon 50/1.4 "Millenium" as it was getting great reviews and comparing it to a Summilux 50/1.4. I found a set of S3 2000 with lens for sale, and I got it. I have used the lens on my Leica cameras with an adapter, but I still have not used my S3 2000 which looks like new in the box. Maybe I should start using it.
 
Yes, you should, Raid. Mount an S Skopar on it, they are very cheap and are excellent performers. They balance nicely on the cameras because of the light weight. Because of the small shade they do not obstruct the viewfinder. I paid for mine $75.

You can get B+W prints in any contrast you like if you know how to do it. My scans here are from siver/gelatine split grade prints. These have more through-drawing in the light parts of the image than normal prints, but the darkest parts of the image are firmly black so there is enough force in the pictures.

Finally I've found an early All black Nikkor 50mm f/1.4.

As you can read in the books by Bob Rotoloni, these are rather special lenses. The first series is from 1953, before the appearance of the black Nikon S2, about 400 pieces. At that time the Nikon S was produced. The black Nikon S is extremely rare, only a few were made, so why the early all black Nikkor 50mm f/1.4 was made? Nobody knows.

Perhaps Nikon intended to make a batch of black Nikon S cameras but this was cancelled because the S2 was already on its way.

It looks nice on the black Nikon S2 however.
