Whats your travel setup?

Going on a 40th wedding aniversary cruise soon. Oh what cameras to take. I have an M8, M6, X113 & Fuji XT1. Was thinking of taking Ektar 100 and the M6 along with the X113. I go back & forth about taking the Fuji, as want to travel light, but I do love the 10-24 lens.

Today Im down to the M8 w/zeiss 25, & the X113. What do you travel with?

I tend to take one digital body and one film body. Digital is for quick, snapshooty stuff, and it may be my Nikon D700 or my Fuji X100. When it comes to film I learned that the less I carry the better I like it, so I have just one camera and one lens (tends to be a 35mm lens and ISO 400 B&W film).

The days when I traveled with my Leica arsenal are gone... and I'm glad about it too!

So, what's in your (travel) wallet? 😉

I think for a wedding anniversary cruise I would just take what can fit in one bag, and not a large one. I would just bring the cameras that share the same lenses, like the M8 and M6, maybe. Better not to bring too much to keep track of.

We're planning a trip to Italy for my wife's birthday in October. I'm planning on taking just a small digital body and one lens with a wide zoom range. Im not on assignment just vacation. I find taking too much gear make me feeling I'm on a job and distracts from the joy of the trip. The only thing we do with the prints is put them in an album. We rarely print larger than 5x7.

The last trip over I took B&W film and a digital body. My 400 Asa film was ruined in Paris when my carry on was run several times through the Xray. I don't think the screener knew what my F2 was. It left a pattern on every roll. Now I only take a small digital.

Family vacations are about the memories for me.. I tend to go minimalist. One prime camera w/ a zoom or a single prime lens (like a 35 or 40 or 50 fov) and a cheap p&s that can be used as a backup but also something u can hand to a fellow tourist to take a snap of u and your family together.

When I was shooting film, I never thought of a backup camera. Prior to digital, it was a Nikon fe2 w/ 28-105 plus 50f1.4 or a Leica CL w/ 40f2 plus vc 21f4.

These days, I plan to bring a Panasonic lx100 paired w/ a cheap Sony p&s that is waterproof down to around 10 meters. It has 24-75f1.7-2.8 fov zoom and can do 4k video. Small enough to fit in a jacket pocket.

Given what u have, it kind of depends on if u are really a film shooter or digital. I would lean toward the xt1 or the Leica x myself. Both have better high iso then the m8.

PS the LX100 is only a 12mp but if u don't need to crop in post and u only print up to 13x19, it is enough mp for me..ymmv.

Did a cruise, as well as an extended trip about parts of Europe a couple of years ago. Took an M6, with 35 and 50 Summicrons. And an X1 which I bought used as we left NZ (first stop, Singapore, it just happened that I knew it was there). Worried that I had left all my "good gear" at home, and that the X1 would not be any good.

Worried over nothing, took gazzillions of excellent shots with the X1, and a couple of rolls with the M6. The X1 was simpler, quicker, and almost more fun than the M6.

Going for another month and a half soon, with another cruise (man, you'll love it), and guess what, the X1 is coming again. Might take the M6 again.

Keep it simple, take the X, and if you really have the room, the M6 and a lens or two. My two M6 lenses are the 35 Summicron, and the 50 Summicron collapsible, both are small and not too heavy. Take both, I will.

My last cruise (last year) - I brought an NEX6 with a 10-18mm and 16-50mm.

My last trip (not a cruise) - a Nikon D800e with a Sigma 35/1.4 ART.

Going forward - Nikon D800e with 1 or 2 lenses. iPhone 6Plus as backup.

I always travel with the same gear. Inside a Billingham Hadley Pro bag I carry:

Nikon FM2n w/20mm, and 55mm lenses

3 cameras but they fit nicely in the bag and I can carry it around all day without much hassle.

Take whatever feels best, if that is film, just take the M6.....

If it is a "big" trip, I bring my "big" camera: my Sony A900 with G and Zeiss lenses. For smaller trips I bring my smaller camera, the Sony Nex F3 with EVF and 19mm and 50mm lenses. Usually throw in something that I can use as a back-up but that doesn't overlap too much.

For me the choice depends on the travel, and varies very much.
For instance, I did a solo (winter) trip on the Trans-Siberian railway carrying only a Ricoh Gr1, her digital sister GR and a home made pinhole camera.
In 3 days am going to Iceland with a Hassy+80mm lens loaded with TMax and a Polaroid SX-70 with color Impossible film..
I don't think you have any use for advice on this. Follow your istinct, and enjoy whatever you bring (especially your company ;-)

Travel light or take the lot including the tripod and, at least, two flashes and a stand for one of them...

I don't think there's an in-between outfit. Usually I use the compact digital and a film P&S or just one of them (meaning no back-up). Plus my wife has a smart 'phone with a decent lens, flash etc.

If the travel is to do something special like wildlife etc then I sort out a special outfit. Otherwise, as I said, travel light. You can take the lightweight outfit with you into cafes, pubs etc and get a lot of souvenirs that you can't do with a bigger outfit. Also I tended to leave the Leica etc in the hotel safe and then wondered why I took it.

Less is more for me, if I bring to many cameras and lenses, I just get hanged up in what to use and miss/forget to shoot. So I prefere the M6 with the 35 summicron and 400 b&w film, and the Ricoh GR for colours.

Hi,

I'll second the mju-I as a brilliant travel camera, especially if you like strolling around with eyes and ears working and a small, neat camera in your pocket ready to take out and use quickly.

I'd say the same about the XA2 and Konica A4. Then there's the dearer XA range, mju-II, Ricoh R1, Konica C35 (the RF version), Pentax ESPIO mini, Canon M35L, Leica mini's etc. But all are small and neat with decent lenses and cheap enough to buy two and have a back-up ready. Or one for B&W and the other for colour.

The trouble is, people don't seem to like small, mass produced by the millions cameras but when they turn up in charity shops every week or two at silly prices you should snatch them up and discover just how good they are, or how over rated others are...

I often wish there was a digital version of them.

PS Perhaps the Nikon AF35 or something, I've yet to find one for a pound but am keeping my eyes open. FWIW, I don't like recommending cameras I've not owned and used.

PPS There's also a brilliant camera support by FED and various German (like Rowi) and Japanese (Anon) makers; the sort with a B&S head and a clamp. Plus there's Cobra's brilliant slave flash that's about the size (perhaps a little larger) of a box of matches. Both idea for lightweight travel.
