Your travel setup, your input?

I've decided I need something like this. I never got a Billingham, although they're very nice, but always used Domkes or similar which are still clearly camera bags that likely contain a nice camera. I'm not going out on a fashion runway, I'm going out to get photographs 😉

And you do not want to excite the interest of a would-be smash and grab thief. Army surplus stores or used shops like the Salvation Army or the like.

Lightweight pocket 35mm film camera, alway ready in a coat inside chest pocket.
Most often a folder like the Minox 35ML or "capsule" type Olympus XA/XA2/XA3.
Additional roll of film in another pocket. FWIW same setup as my "everyday carry"...

Yes, another tack. I have a lovely Pentax Q-S1 which is tiny. That in one pocket and the two basic zooms in another and I am stripped down good-to-go. And that Q-S1 punches well above its weight. Even the tiny DMC-SZ3 is good. But I do like at least one "regular" camera even including the M8 which is APSH format. I'll have to start taking the lovely little Q-S1 out more. So many choices; so little ability. ;o)

An old friend, a pro, used to carry his M-3 in a WW I gas mask bag. It looked ragged and crappy and excited no interest. He always had it with him.

No, no, a slightly tatty one. It is better if it looks shabby. I never dreamed Chuck had an M-3 in that ratty, tatty old sack. His was OD canvas. But you do what works for you. It just should not attract interest. BTW, you gave me the same link twice. I like Hugo, yes, but two in a row of the same thing? Nahh. LOL

Old war surplus gas mask bags were a common accessory used by travellers on the hippie trail. They were dirt cheap, only a couple dollars. In 1971 I did my first around the world trip and used a ratty old gas mask bag to hold a 3g , lenses and film. My route took me through Morocco, Europe, Middle East, Afghanistan, and India. Had an open dated PanAm ticket and a money belt full of Amex TCs so a very flexible schedule.

A good thing as the Indo-Pakistan war started a few days after my arrival in Delhi from Kabul and all international flights were canceled. Scary times but made some lifelong friendships as well as some unique photos.
The gas mask bag got used on several more India trips including another ATW in 1976-77. I traveled alone and often found the best photos of craftspeople down dark back alleys so made a conscious effort to NOT look like a tourist carrying expensive gear. In fact I left my more valuable M cameras at home and used Barnacks almost exclusively for travel. The 3g only set me back $125 with f/3.5 Elmar so wouldn’t be a huge loss if I got mugged at some point.

That looks like a good idea for going out in rain. But, obviously a camera under that flappy thing.

The ratty nondescript bag that holds a body (maybe 2), extra lens, and small sundries is more what I could use. I seem to have no problem "dressing down", or so my wife tells me 🙄
