Where have all the Elmars gone?

Pre-war and "wartime" Elmar`s are getting, harder and harder to find in good shape, they are the Leica lens of all lenses, still perfect for that classic look in Leica 35mm, they excel in black and white photography, I just love them! 😀

Interesting, as I've recently discovered mine dates from 1942 - can you point me towards a source of information about wartime production?

Many thanks

The ad has been viewed 400 times 😱on RFF, but no takers.

290309935941 30 min to go and still no bids (less than $100).
I don't have anything to do with this.

It looks a bit worn and I don't know what the seller means with "lens seems to be clear"

Here are some being the third an Industar. According to their serial numbers, both the Elmars are from 1948. However as you can see they have a quite different finish. The one on the left looks more like the chromium on pre-war cameras, whereas the right one has a softer chromium as the Industar does (and the post-war cameras). Further, the Elmar on the right has the bright ring round the lens, whereas the other had a black painted ring - paint is wearing off. Also the engravings are very different in style; one might think they were made in different years or factories. The left one is in feet, the right one in meters.

The diaphragm blades are positioned the same in the Elmars, but of course differently in the Industar since the Industar is a true Tessar type lens and the Elmars are not. Btw some time ago I tested the two of these Industars against both the Elmars, and although at first I thought like others here on RFF that the Industars were sharper, it is not so - at least not according to my test results. Both Elmars came out sharper and had a little better color rendition. Perhaps this is only so because the Elmars are post war with somewhat better coating than the Industars (on the Industars one can hardly see any coating).

the Industars, like all soviet photo gear vary a lot.

I just sold a beautiful crystal clear and seemingly rare 1939 "Feet" scala f3.5 50mm Elmar for $250 yesterday here at RFF! 😀

Someone`s going to have fun with that one 😉

Tom

PS: Speaking of Elmar`s....does anyone have a LARGE SCREW "European" Brown Leather case (with two rivet/one snap short flap on back) case 1942 to 1947 issue with a "Flat Nose" for the Elmar?

I need one for the Next US Army IIIC K Grey I`m picking up soon!!!!
