Hi Folks,
I have been wanting one of those for a while now. They aren't very common in Europe... Is there any place that sells them that I have been missing? Of course inspecting one in person would be best, but that doesn't seem possible.
There's always the possibility to order from Japan, but having to return one because of faded RF patch or so would be a major pain. Is judging the RF patch from pictures through the VF a reasonably reliable method?
My other question would be about eyepiece diopters- are any available for the P, or the 7, or any ideas for DIY (might open another thread about that..)?
Thanks for your thoughts!
J.

you will not find a better place to buy classic rangefinders
whether Canon, Nikon or Leica
than the RFF classifieds
seriously.

I believe you are right, but I rarely see Canon ltm RFs in the classifieds, and haven't seen any on this side of the pond. But I could indeed consider buying on from the classifieds from say, the US, if one shows up, still better than form ebay JP, because I would have more faith in the description.

They're there, but like most cameras, they come and go. If you're not in hurry, just keep on watching the RFF classifieds. A Canon that interests you will pop up someday.

Yes, but their prices
and the listed prices exclude tax!

Erm, in the European Union, it's completely normal that you have to pay the VAT of the particular country where the items are sent from.

Did that surprise you?

edit:

Prices are NET*. Only on items marked with an asterisk (*) we have to add 20% VAT (10% for Literature) for sales within the European Community (EC)

If the UK still counts as Europe, you could try MW Classics, they usually have a few

(I have no relationship with them, except as an occasional, and satisfied, customer)

Right, that's why prices including tax are usually given when selling to consumers. I somehow missed the part with the asterisk, so I thought all their prices didn't include tax. Most prices do include tax in fact. Even so they seem steep...

Thank you, I'll check MW classics out!
Of course Britain is Europe, has always been and will always be, if you ask anybody from continental Europe. Only Brits seem to have this weird idea where islands that clearly are on the continental shelf aren't part of the respective continent :D

Ffordes in Scotland are OK to deal with.
Thank you, I have checked their website a while ago and didn't see what I was looking for, but I'll check again!

I just buy from JP sellers on eBay and pay the painful tax.

I see eBay sales from UK and Germany every now and then, but the prices are much more expensive than the JP ones. In the end you probably pay the same amount.

The only advantage to buy from EU seller is that if the camera came as crap, the returning postage is probably cheaper, and you lose less in the end due to no VATs paid (for the non-working camera).

Ask for extra photo from the JP sellers, if they don't provide detailed photos regarding your question then pick another seller.

So far:
http://www.clicktheclassic.com (NL) and http://mwclassic.com (UK) have user Canon ltm RFs in stock! Thanks for suggesting these two, I hadn't been aware of them!
Ffordes don't seem to have any at the moment, and leicashop appear to be catering more to collectors, their prices seem rather high, more rare models, and more minty ones.

I haven't made up my mind yet where and what to buy. I'm undecided between P and 7, might try both... I want to use 35s, so the 7 VF is supposed to be better, and the size, main point often made against it, actually isn't so bad, same as a spotmatic which I like in hand.
I'll let you know how it turns out eventually.
Thank you all for your contributions so far, I wasn't very hopeful when I started this thread, but but now I have several options!
Keep the suggestions coming though, more is better!

I was almost ready to do that, but contributors to this thread have shown me that I don't need to! I've seen some Canons at the websites named above at prices not too different from those from JP if you include shipping.

We're certainly not short of weird ideas these days :bang:

Good luck with your quest

Another vote for MW Classics. They always have a selection at reasonable prices with fairly accurate descriptions, so you won't go far wrong buying from them.

Importing from Japan is far more risky in my experience (via Japanese auction sites). There are certainly some nice cameras out there but the sellers' descriptions are usually unfathomable, and there is a strong likelihood of having to pay import duties. Then there are auction fees, postage within Japan, shipping fees from Japan to Europe, currency conversion charges etc.

Canon RF's

Canon RF's

I have had good luck with several sellers in Japan. Just bought a P and two lens from 3 different sellers. Will post on them as soon as they arrive.
