Where in the US (I mean which online store) would I find a good range of developers? I know B&H, but I thought I would try out a few developers (microphen, perceptol) but they don't seem to have these. I suppose they might not be produced anymore, but is that the reason? What are the available alternatives to fine grain developers like perceptol? They list a huge number of 'photographer's formulary' developers and my guess is that one may find equivalents to other unavailable developers among these. Anyone used some of these?

Try Porter's at http://www.porters.com/

They don't list as many as they used to and be certain to check the shipping costs you'll be charged.

It is my understanding (gained from one of my usual mail order places in the UK - Speed Graphic) that both microphen and perceptol will be returning. Stocks were used up during Ilford's recent difficulties, but production is reported to be recommencing and they will be available again in the summer.

I get most of my scratch chemicals from Photographer's Formulary. I've used their TFX-2, which is a proprietary mixture based on FX-2 and supposedly an excellent stand developer.
If you are interest in their developers, peruse their site or call/e-mail and ask for a catalog.
I just got it in the mail, and it explains all their developers. Some of them are their versions of other developers with proprietary improvements and reissues of discontinued developers. I know they have, amongst many others, a Rodinal, D76, Divided D76, D23, pyro-based, a reversal process for TMax films, PMK, etc., and that's just the film developers. They also have developers and chemicals for paper, holography, and alternate printing processes. Pretty interesting stuff.

Just ordered some FX-39 from B&H along with a buch of film I haven't tried before. Decided to wait on other developers (DD-X is also out of stock but expected to arrive again). Noticed that B&H has the largest range (with the exception of Freestyle perhaps) and is definitely the cheapest. For eg., DD-X (litre) listed as $12.xx from B&H, $15.xx from Freestyle and $18.xx from Porters.
