Does anyone know of any good markets/fairs/galleries in London where one can peruse and purchase reasonably priced prints? I've got some wallspace in my flat that needs filling, and I would love to fill it with some photos - not iconic or famous photos, but those taken by the common photographer. I have bought photos from markets before (Cambridge and Greenwich) and find talking to a photographer and finding an appealing image (at a reasonable price) a very satisfying experience.

Any tips?

No tips but in case you're interested, on May 16 Sotheby's has a photography auction in London. I reckon the prices are way over your budget, though. 🙂

Hi Robin, I recently attended an exhibition in the St. Gile Gallery in Norwich by my friend, Steve Taylor, who has recently done some very nice Norfolk coastal landscapes.

The link to his site is here: www.fivefourphotography.com

Regards, Yaron

There are some very nice shots on that site, Yaron, but sadly out of my price range. I was thinking £30-£100. A tight budget, I know, but I have bought some great prints in the £15-£50 range before now.

Fill them with your own photos, Robin! You've got some fantastic shots in your China gallery.

Thanks, Clarence 🙂

I guess that would be cheaper...!

I do already have a wall set aside for a few of these, but would rather they weren't covering the whole flat!

Just thinking out of the box here, what about looking through the gallery here, finding some photos you like, and PMing the photographers offering a print swap?

You never know - it could catch on...

We are coming up to degree show time at most art colleges in London: St Martin's, RCA etc. You might try contacting them to see if any students are selling any of their work.

I was going to suggest something similar: there's some fantastic talent represented on this site.

So many members have galleries, photoblogs, etc - have a look around and find something you like, then get in touch with the photographer.

I went to London 2 weeks ago and bougth 2 prints:

1º in Notting Hill market is a picture taken in 1911 in Antarctica by H. PONTING, a protographer who traveled with Captain Scott. The shop was in a big gallery of shops, and they had a lot of photos of this expedition and other vintage pictures. 18 pounds.

2º print: in the Covent Garden market, a photo by Jurek Nems.
This one was 30 pounds.

Also, as others said, there´s a lot of talented people on the site, and some of them would proudly give you a print for free (if you pay the lab and shipping) if you ask them for the price of a print.

Hey, is there a hint of sarcasm there? 🙂

None at all. Trust me. I'm not the sarcastic kind.
I remember being blown away by your photos back when you hesitantly announced your show, and wishing I could see them "in real life." I was so sure they would sell well.
I would hang any one of them with delight.

For modern prints, go to Lupe, on Ezra St, Columbia Rd, I think it's E1. Sunday morning is a good time to go, there's a very photogenic flower market. Lupe is not as expensive as the central London galleries, nad has both high-art stuff, plus newspaper photogs like Jane Bown (google her). Plus the staff are nice and friendly. Also try the Getty gallery on Market PLace, just off Oxford St - they do lovely prints, the name ones are hugely overpriced, but I know people who've bought lovely prints from them for little money. There's another rock'n'roll gallery whose name I forget on Poland St, plus the Proud Gallery (expensvie) by Charing Cross.

Always worth waiting for the RCA MA show, which often has beautiful stuff, which will be in the summer.

Brilliant suggestions, all!

I'll be sure to check out those locations, Paul.
Good tip about the student shows, Chris.
The member's gallery approach is a great idea, and I think the two RFF books I recently bought are a great place to start. Expect some PMs soon, people!
And lubitel - those images look great. There are a few I really like! I'll be in touch....

I think I'm going to need a bigger flat....

Robin, a bit late here, but there's a gallery right next door to Aperture Photographic, which is conveniently located near the British Museum on 44 Museum St in London. The works in there are VERY reasonably priced. I can't remember the name of the photographer offhand though.. does a lot of street and architectural photography, all in B+W.

I sell the photos on my website too, if you happen to be looking at member's sites... 😉 Lately I've been printing my own in my makeshift darkroom so I can offer them at slightly lower prices than listed on my website prints prices page, which hasn't been updated in ages.
