Why non photo place? Adorama has them available for very little money and they are tinted brown specifically for photo work. If you're anxious to get started you could always use plastic milk jugs for the interim and just paint them black (on the outside) or keep them covered with cloth to keep out the light.
Or you could use 2 of the 2 liter jugs.

Hi Jay, As a fellow Canadian I'll give you a quick hint that should work just fine. Most every drug store these days sells distilled water. Many sell the jugs at the store empty and distilled water is distributed from a machine. The jugs cost I believe $1.25 or so. I recycle about 4-6 a month as my wife uses them for her CPAP machine and we also buy milk in 1 gallon (ok, 4 litre for you youngsters, LOL) jugs.

Darn - beat me to it. I guess in CA the Clorox jugs (actually just buy the store brand at about 40 cents or so) will be 4L - so just leave an inch or so (er...2.8 to 5.5 cm) off the "top".
I "caught" my wife today looking at a "designer" plastic water bottle in our local "gourmet store". After I pointed out they were just plastic containers, of which we have a million and regularly put into recycling bins, she put it down and we moved on.

Be careful with the accordian style 1 gallon jugs that you can buy at photography stores. I picked up two of them a few weeks ago when I was mixing up my first batch of diafine. I extended the jugs all the way, they compress so that when you start running low, you can squeeze out the air, and poored the powder in. I then took my 1 gallon of distilled water and poored it into the jug. 20 seconds later, I had water & diafine chemicals pooring over the side. Apparently the jugs do not hold exactly one gallon. I'm dissappointed, as now i have a batch of solution A & B, but they do not have exactly one gallon of water in them.
I'm finally getting around to souping film tomorrow morning, so I hope all goes well.

First, no need to use these jugs with Diafine. It will last a couple of years or more in regular old solid jugs. Diafine is not subject to degradation by exposure to air, at least that has been my experience over the last 25 or 30 years.
Second (and as someone already pointed out

If you add 1 gallon of water to the powder, then you will end up with more than 1 gallon of solution. You need to dissolve the powder in about 3/4 of a gallon of water amd then fill to the full gallon, which is why you need a method of actually knowing when you have a gallon in your bottle.
ManGo
Yeah, I did let a little dissolve a bit before pouring the rest in. The power doesn't displace that much water
I talked with a guy at the shop that I picked them up at, and I'm not the only person who has discovered this. Still haven't had a chance to change containers & add a splash more water to it...
