I checked out the sponsors and keh for a cheap MDa or MD-2 but only got as low as $430. If you've bought one, where did you get it? Should I just be patient and check ebay every week?

Since you are looking for a cheap camera, I am assuming that you are not a collector. Is there anything specific you need an MDa for? If you just want a body to use M lenses on, a used Bessa R2 or T or a Leica CL gets you a free rangefinder and exposure meter included. With the Bessa you also get a better exposure time range and flash sync.

They're fairly collectible. I don't think you're going to do any better unless you get lucky (find a college or university or lab getting rid of "obsolete" gear, for example).

I'm looking for one to replace to shell of an M2, to eliminate self timer and preview levers. An M1 would also work. Ebays completed listings have a few, so that's what I'll look for as of now.

You don't want an MDa or MD2 for a replacement body shell for an M2. The M2 has "teeth" on the top cover and I don't think it will fit on the later shells which were made for teethless top covers. An M1 or MD could work, but I'm not sure about the rewind (button or lever).

The M1 and MD are probably even more expensive than the MDa/MD2 though!

i agree ith rxmd; i've done it myself to my M2 in progress. It's not difficult and a lot chaeper than buying another body. I have removed the self timer completely in the process. Get a new cover from Aki Asahi. Cover up the holes with a small piece of tin can and make them even with the rest of the body with automotive filler.
