Looking for an inexpensive Summitar or Summar. Can't spend a fortune and would probably have to buy after christmas. If your looking for something in trade, I do have some gear I could part with, and a lot of 120 BW film, unexpired. Needs to fit on a Leica III screwmount, not m mount. I'd consider another 50mm f2 or faster lens for Leica M39, but these looked to be the two leica's in my budget.
Thanks,
Eric

Ebay can be a bit of a crap-shoot when it comes to Summitars or Summars. With the dealers mentioned above you'd be sure you get what you pay for.

Remember if you're dealing with MW Classic that you can usually haggle over the price - often with good discounts. It's also worth sending them an e-mail or calling them for a more in- depth description of the lens you want to buy, not only for your peace of mind but because they sometimes have others not listed on their website.

I've bought twice from mwclassic and have been happy with the price and the condition of the item both times.

In fact, for certain things, Rollei or Leica stuff, I'm pretty sure they are cheaper than ebay every time.

I emailed them over a summar they had for a good priced, but they told me it was sold and directed me to a slightly higher priced lens that's not on the website yet. Still waiting for photos from them. I'll let you all know if I find something.

They do have a quick turnover of stock, and that's probably even quicker now that a few of us have posted a link here and recommended them! Also I should imagine that the strength of the dollar against the pound has made business a bit brisker.

Hi

I have bought several things from MW and I am very happy with their offerings. Prices are spot on...unless you are a "class case" collector. If you look for user stuff this is the address.

cheers
Uwe

Well I've ended up getting a summar from a fellow RFF'er, NickTrop. Should get here in a week or so. Thanks for all of the suggestions!

Sorry for the thread resurrection, but does anyone have any new tips for procuring a Summar? I very much want one and they seem to be nowhere! KEH has one in UG condition, which doesn't make sense to buy, in my opinion.

Thanks in advance.

You might try giving Sherry K a call. I was speaking to her about an unrelated topic and picked up a nice Summar at a nice price awhile back. You never know what she's got 'cause her website is rarely updated. Oh yes, she doesn't really get going until late in the day---at least 5-6 EST.

Seems everybody wants one, and they often are hazed/scratched... Wonder why this sudden trend.

I was selling a clone, a 1930s FED 50/2.0, here on the forum. There was interest but no buyers so I have it on the auction site now.

I still have my Summar from Nick. After about a year and half of using it I sent it in for a CLA from my local repairman. It was sharp before, now it's not only sharp but easy to focus and adjust the aperture. Mine is a coated variant from 1936. Can't help on where to find one, I'm not letting mine go. I still can't decide which is sharper; my summicron or the summar. The summar renders differently for certain though. Some recent shots:

At 2.8

and f2.2 or 2.8. Can't quite remember.

Shootist - try the one in ugly condition. They have a great return policy, and I've had some good luck with KEH.

Thanks. I might do that in a few days... waiting on a few leads (emailed Sherry Krauter, as suggested :) ). Makes me a bit sour that UG is for $200! A nice looking one just sold in these here classifieds for $200.
