Where to send film to be scanned

Looking for a good source to scan my slides and neg film on west coast.

I like A&I in L.A. Fast, excellent work, and they will explain things on the phone if necessary. Never any scratches or dust on the negs.

NCPS is great, but expensive. (I live in LA, so I pay the tax AND shipping). A&I is next on my list to try, as I'm doing more color these days. They're local, so hopefully they can give me the same results. Don't send it to Swan - they are who Freestyle outsources to, and the first two rolls I gave them BOTH came back with issues.

NCPS is not that expensive if your negs are uncut. I think it's $15 for high res per roll (35mm or 120). I have only used the service in conjunction with processing but have been very pleased with the results.

I've also used NCPS, and they are not expensive when you look at what most shops charge for very low res scans. I was very happy with the color stuff, not so with b&w (salt and pepper grain resulted). I'll continue to use them for color work- as far as I am concerned, there is no competition in terms of value.

I think you would want to use them for processing and scanning if you want to keep overall cost down.

A scanner will pay for itself quite quickly and leaves you in control.

Yes, it's tedious, but so is shipping film to and fro.

If you're on the West Coast, then A&I is probably your best bet. I've used them quite a lot and never any stains, dust, scratches or anything. Pro lab. Unfortunately, they've raised their prices so much that now I'm trying out the Black & White lab in Tucson, which has more affordable rates. $8 to simply develop a roll of 35mm, and another $15 to $35 for scanning (depends on the file size) is way too steep for my blood.

I agree, buy yourself a Nikon V ED or at least a Minolta Scan Dual or you'll go broke. I think accessories are available to do batch scans as well if you don't want to be tethered to the computer the whole time.

The results from NCPS on Ken Rockwell's site are great, I'm in the UK and will likely give them a try soon, looks very impressive.

Precision Camera in Austin Texas will do identical scans to NCPS, and their development is cheaper.
