Where Would You Go?

We just had our midterm elections and results are overwhelmingly in the current administration's favor... unfortunately.

There's a ferry that runs daily from Manila to Corregidor island. It is mostly a tourist spot nowadays with lots of abandoned military structures. Same goes for the Death March memorial in Bataan but would take 4 to 5 hours drive from Manila.

Diving in Subic is not as great as it was before. There are still plenty of dive centers around but marine biodiversity in the area has declined. Highly encourage to go south in Batangas area. World famous dive spots await.

Well, a lot has happened in my life since the last post. I have sold my house after 21 years and will be leaving El Paso. My wife of 30 years wants a divorce and she departed last Friday in a Uhaul toward Alaska. If a divorce can ever be friendly, ours was since we had grown apart and both acknowledged we should each go our own way.

Anyway, my diving trip is about two weeks away. I have dive reservations in Subic and Puerto Galero. I plan on taking the FujiX100F and 28 aux lens as well as a Osmo 4K action camera. I will either take the M2 or MP240 with a 50 as the X100F pretty well has 28 and 35 covered. And film can wait to be developed back in the US as this trip will only last a month.

Besides the diving, I hope to do some photography along the Bataan Death March and Corregidor and if the rain lets up a bit a motorcycle trip north but I am definitely waiting to see what the weather is like.

Any other hints?

^ WOW, a lot has happened! I hope that you have better luck than I with transportation in the Philippines, in a word **** awful, it's painful sitting for so long and going almost nowhere. On a brighter note , there's a lot to see.

The historical Binondo area of Manila is a great street photography destination. Within Binondo is Manila Chinatown. The area is pretty well preserved, a well worn authentic fossil far away from ritzy Makati. There are restaurants with original decor dating back 50 years. One can wander around for a good two days shoot. This is an actual neighborhood with friendly people with temples, churches, markets and local businesses reflecting traditional Chinese-Filipino life. BTW traffic is horribly and that’s an understatement. Be sure to arrive late at night else you’ll spend more time in the cab than on the flight.

Any other hints?

Officially monsoon season which means flooding all over the metro and late afternoon heavy traffic. We're anticipating a tropical depression to enter late this week. Hope it clears up by the time you arrive.

Well, I am heading out in two days for a month with the emphasis on diving. However, it is the wet season so we will be playing it day to day.

I have decided to travel with an M2 and a 50f1.1 Nokton. It is not a lens I would normally travel with but I have decided to experiment. Will pack about ten rolls of film equal parts black and white and color ISO 400. Also, a Fuji X100F for digital with an aux lens for the 28 FOV and digital capture. The X100F is outstanding for portraits using flash fill in that bright tropical sun. And finally I have been talked into trying a Osmo Action camera for video and dive shots. They are small, simple and cheap compared to Leica ($350 new).

Are there any places to process film which can be recommended?

Studio 58 in Makati City is a pro lab. I use them for processing and printing.
