The 28/3.5 may be sharper. The 28/2.8 will not make you another Winogrand.

Thanks all! This thread has gotten me very interested in the Canon 28mm lenses. I've done quite a bit of research on the 28mm Canon lens so I'll post what I've found out over in the Canon RF Cameras forum.

So far I'm leaning toward a 28mm f/3.5 Serenar lens. Right behind it is the CV 28mm f/3.5

Devin (B9) who is truly a benign person, has a modern LTM Kobalux 28/3.5 for trade, but he will probably consider selling it or doing trade/cash etc. Use the gallery lens browser to see examples (there are not many).
PS: Devin's was mine for a year or so, and is sharp and contrasty. I had traded for it with another RFF member, so it has been well cared for. I very much liked it on my Konica RF, but then acquired a 28 Biogon....

The Kobalux 28/3.5 is an excellent lens. It is very well made, and it is very sharp. Color rendition with it is great too.

For you Canon 28mm f/3.5 LTM users, does the front of the lens rotate when you focus it?
If it does then that means it needs a round shade. If it doesn't it can use a round or rectangular shade.
Ditto for the Canon 28mm f/2.8 LTM.
Thanks!

Neither lens rotates when focusing; but neither lens really needs a shade, since the front element is well-recessed into the barrel. (Canon never made a hood for these lenses.)

Thanks! I usually have a yellow or skylight filter on my lenses and I want to use a shade to prevent reflections off of the filter. If I get the 28mm f/3.5 I'll have SK Grimes make a custom stepping ring from 34mm to 39mm and use the Leica 12526 shade.
I did this to my 50mm f/1.8 Canon lens (40mm to 39mm) and SK Grimes cut a groove into the ring so that the Leica shade 12585 clips on perfectly.

For a lens with a 34mm filter ring, you could just use a Leitz SOOGZ adapter (clamp-on A36 to E39 adapter), which already has a groove milled in it for Leica A42 clip-on shades.
However, while a SOOGZ and 39mm filter doesn't cause any problems, adding an IROOA hood does result in hard vignetting in the corners (I just tried this combo with my Canon 28/3.5 on an M240). I don't have a 12526 anymore to try but, like the IROOA, it's intended for a 35mm lens' field of view. You might do better with a 12504 vented shade (alas, I no longer have one of those either).
The best/coolest hood to use, IMO, would be a Leitz SOOHN A36 clamp-on hood for the 28/6.3 Hektor (I used to have one, but foolishly sold it) with 34mm screw-in filters on your lens. (Alternatively, you could use the rectangular SOOBK clamp-on shade for the 28/5.6 Summaron, but that would run you 2x the cost of the Canon lens.)

Thanks! Good info. The Leica 12526 shade is being sold by Leica with their 28mm f/2.8 Elmarit so I don't think it will vignette with the Canon 28mm f/3.5. At $125 it's not cheap but should be effective.
I will take a look at the Leitz SOOGZ adapter. I'm not a fan of clamp on items - I've lost a couple of expensive clamp on shades in the past.
The Leitz SOOHN sounds expensive. As the 28mm Hektor is a $1K lens I imagine that the shade is up there too

Well, I think I bought and sold my user-condition SOOHN for around $75 -- but that may just have been RFF family pricing -- dunno what they go for in the real world.

Life is good! I put in a bid on a Canon 28mm f/3.5 Serenar and won it for $152!
http://www.ebay.com/itm/Excellent-C...5Dye1SXmnX201ETHXZ10Y%3D&orig_cvip=true&rt=nc
At $152 how could I not give it a go?
I have the M adapter for it so when the 28mm lens arrives it's off to Don Goldberg for a CLA. When I get it back I'll shoot some film and see how it does.
I am seriously thinking of getting the CV 28mm f/3.5 as well and using them both. We'll see how well the Canon 28 f/3.5 does.

I was the other person who bid on that lens. You should be thanking me for being too preoccupied with being on vacation to bid it up.
I've been looking for a 28 to replace my Snapshot Skopar, which is a bit too contrasty for my liking. If it turns out not to be everything you'd hoped, let me know.

My only 28 is the Nikkor LTM mounted on my Leica iiif RD. The iif RD gets the 35/2.8 Canon. Both are fine performers. Don't own one of those newfangled M-4 P's.

The 28mm Summaron is what I'd consider a collector's lens and not a user's lens. If I were to spend $1k I'd get the Minolta-G 28mm or a Nikkor 28mm in LTM.
I'll look into the MS Optical 28 triplet.
Thanks!
The triplet is tiny and fun to use -- but an M mount. It goes nicely on a Leica CL though...

The 28mm f/3.5 Canon arrived yesterday afternoon. It looks pretty good - has a few specs inside it. Overall I'm pleased.
It's off to Don Goldberg for a CLA along with an 85mm f/2 Serenar.

Tony,
It is a great lens for street. I love that the distance scale is in feet only. Stop down to F-5.6 or F-8 and set your "kill zone."
BTW the 90mm frames is the middle rectangle in using the "Rule of Thirds." I tend to shoot vertically a lot with a 28 and for portraits if I frame a face in the 90mm framelines it seems that I get a great composition every time.
