35/2 asph.
why? cause it's a Leica, and I'm a snob!

and it's the only 35mm lens I own (there's always that)

;)

I once owned the 35/1.2 Nokton which went away in a trade...sucks! Wish I still had it.

Heres a sample of the 35/2 asph. ( or three )

CV Skopar f2.5 v.1

CV Skopar f2.5 v.1

The CV Skopar 35/2.5 is good, and affordable. The first version (LTM) is what I have. Somehow I prefer it to the CV Ultron 1.7, the "better" lens, supposedly. It is, apparently, much easier and more reliable to make a good lens at a modest aperture. Doubly so to keep is affordable.

Well,

you can strike post #29...

Shortly after writing I would never sell my L-Hexanon 35/2.0, I did anyway.

Replaced it with a true near-mint Summilux 35/1.4 pre-ASPH from 1982 yesterday. I bought it from the original owner who shelled out for a RF kit in the early eighties, hardly used the lens, switched to Leica SLR and now as a pensioner decided he was not going to return to RF but instead end his work in photography.

If memory served him well, he's shot three rolls with it...

It's as new, came with the as new hood, caps, filter, case and warranty card. For a price considerably south of those USD 2800 examples that eBay carries....

I've been eyeballin' a Summilux 35/1.4 since I got infected with rangefinderitis but always thought it out of my reach.

Wow that's a great find! I wish I knew where to look for such pensioners :D

Well, "Helen version V" I would have to say the Nokton 1.2 for speed and
C-Biogon for walk around compactness.
One I've never owned ( I nearly did some years ago) which I would love to have is a Summicron V1. Every time I see black and white pictures taken with that lens I think it's the lens for me. Maybe Johan knows of a pensioner looking to sell one? :D

Don't forget the last Canon 35mm f/2 in Leica Screwmount. Very small, excellent contrast and still relatively inexpensive.

In the pub, sipping a beer ..... Jes kidding'.

I voted for the Lux pre-Asph, have a V2. Small, fast, + glow. One f-stop does make a big difference for me (eg Cron), but with similar bokeh/signature as the well/-regarded v3/v4 Crons.
I like to use the 3.5 Summaron on sunny days and the 1.4 for less light.

Shameless plug: will be posting my 35 Asph Cron for sale soon due to loss of job.

Suppose this was the once-in-a-blue-moon kinda pensioner indeed!

The V1 Summicron was on my wanted-list, but it would have had to be the chrome early one and those really take the price nowadays.

Can't say the new lens feels like a trade-off or second choice though :D

I'm on the CV Skopar 2.5 v.1 bandwagon. I really like some other 35s but this is the one I could justify buying to myself. I haven't spent more than $300 on a lens before - the next bit in results I see would involve putting down over $1000... and if I had that much sitting around in my camera budget I'd probably buy a nice Rollei. :)

that's a cool lens, definitely with some mojo. check out maddoc's work with it. he has some great, great stuff, dreamy, aglow.

Having used a number of 35mm Leica lenses (two versions of Summaron, three versions of Summicron including the asph. and two versions of Summilux-pre) for many years the Summilux-pre has been my favorite, however on film and B&W..

Last month I tested it against the Summicron asph. on a Nex-5N.

(BTW, the Summicron asph. has a new owner now..)

I voted "other" b/c my current favorite 35 lens for Leica M is the Canon 35/1.8. Yes, it's soft wide open, and only focuses to a meter, but stopped down a bit it hits a sweet spot of moderate contrast and sharpness that looks great in both b&w and color. It's also very compact and well made. Since I mainly use the 35 lens for street photography, and usually zone or hyperfocus, the "drawbacks" of this lens aren't big deals to me. And sometimes the softness wide open is attractive. I've also got the CV 35/2.5 PII, and the Canon 35/2.8, and have had the CV Ultron 35/1.7. Those lenses are also nice, but there's something special about the way the Canon 35/1.8 renders.

bobYIL - thx for the comparison.
I have both lenses and would agree. the preAsph Lux is softer in resolution which then presents itself as LESS contrasty than the Cron Asph; and in the pics, the Lux preAsph shows a warmer/yellow glow compared to the Cron Asph.

I bet a shot of the preAsph at 1.4 would show even more discrepancies b/w the the Asph Cron in terms of IQ, since the IQ of the preAsph usually takes a nose dive at 1.4, but it does give you that extra stop, which is the best argument for me to keep it.

My actual experience with color rendition: The Summicron V.1 (8-element) has the "coolest" hues.. Summaron 2.8, Summilux-pre and Summicron Asph. have more or less same color rendition however the warmest one is the C-Biogon.

With B&W film, the Asph. has the most contrast (not for me.. dense shadows, rather harsh higlights.)
