I am kinda thinking out loud here, but would like to know what others would do.

I'll be traveling to Salem and Boston next week on a vacation. I plan on taking my Canon G11 and I would also like to take one of 35mm cameras. This is the "short" list, but I still am unsure which one to take.

I could take a rangefinder.

Hi-Matic 7s
Hi-Matic 7sII
Canonet QL17 GIII
Olympus XA

Or, I could go with a completely auto exposure rangefinder.

Hi-Matic E
Hi-Matic F
Konica C35

Or, maybe I should forgo a ragnefinder and then that adds these to the mix.

Olympus Trip 35
Olympus Pen EES-2
Hi-Matic C

If I forget about manual focus and go with a total point and shoot that would add these.

Olympus Stylus Epic (Mju-II)
Hi-Matic AF-C
Chinon Infrafocus 35F-MA
Canon AF35ML
Nikon L35AF
Nikon Lite Touch (AF600)

With these as the ones to choose from, which second camera would you suggest that I take on my trip?

Japanese cameras are forbidden in Massachusettes. Digital Japanese cameras are a hanging offense.

Hasselblads are acceptable. The Pentax 6x7 is acceptable with a waiver obtained at the border.

Have fun!

I live in Boston, and honestly I don't think it matters too much. Bring any of the above cameras that you feel most comfortable making photographs with. I will suggest that a slightly wider lens would be better for downtown (read 35mm here). I am a fan of the 50 myself, but for in the city 35 is a nice normal.

Enjoy the trip!

I agree with having wide lens(es) - 35mm min, 21mm better. I found Boston to have a lot a lot of tight spots so wide is best!

would you shoot with a different camera if the travel were to Chicago, Shanghai, Moscow, Sao Paulo, etc.?

my humble advice: bring your favorite OR the one that you have ignored for the longest time (in that case, make sure it's working first). shoot tons of pix. psot the good ones here and don't forget to have fun. Boston is a terrific place.

Whatever you decide, have a lot of fun! They are both great cities with tons of stuff to photograph. I will echo the others suggestions and tell you to lean toward a wide lens. Lots of small, cramped spaces in both of these very old towns: tight streets and some very small houses. I would also opt for the fastest wide lens you have- those narrow alleys and 350+ year old houses can get pretty dim early.

Enjoy,

Matt

I just moved out of Boston after living there for 11 years, and while I will concur with others that it can be a very cramped city at times, especially in the older and more touristy parts, I got by just fine for a long time with 40mm and 50mm lenses.
