Just got the Nex 7 and want to use it as a 'digital back' with different manual lenses. I have a few Nikkors and got the adapter for those.

What other lenses would be worth a try on the cheap? For example I have seen M42, Pentax K, Canon FD and Zuikos going for a song on ebay.

Any real classics among these?

Not really. Great classic lenses that have the resolving power to cope with the sensor, or any lenses that have a great bokeh, that sort of thing.

My preferences for lenses on 35mm full frame are 35mm/50mm/85mm.

I like playing around with lenses. For example, I have a 50mm E series Nikon. It is terribly soft, but for portraits it can produce wonderful images. I love my 35mm f2 Nikkor. Sharp as a tack and close focussing at 12 inches. So if I can pick up a lens that has useful properties for £20 and stick it on my Nex 7 I will be happy.

A strange question. Effectively you're asking, "Recommend me any lens as long as you think it's special."

If your main interest is toying around with lenses, why don't you just look at those cheap lenses, check them out on Flickr, buy them if you like the pictures, try them and sell them again? Lots of people seem to do that and are happy.

Regarding those M42 and FD and Olympus lenses for £20, the interesting ones from those systems are more expensive than that and already the adapters are going to cost you more than £20. That leaves you stuck with Nikkors. Enough stuff there to try: 24/f2.8, 50/f2, 105/f2.5, ... (buy pre-AI for lower prices). If you want to play around with other systems, why not those lenses that don't work on any DSLR body, they tend to be cheaper (Konica AR 40/f1.8 and so on). Or buy a M39 bellows unit and try a few enlarger lenses, those are really cheap nowadays.

Instead of looking for good lenses, you could also deliberately look for joke lenses. That would strike me as more original. With your Nikon adapter the Nikkor 43-86/f3.5 or 30-60/f4-5.6 come to mind. Make a photo series "Cat shots with dog lenses" or something.

Thanks, rxmd.

£20 was just a figure plucked out of the air. I could go higher than that 🙂

As to joke lenses I think you are right. I have a box full of toy cameras. I have been looking at the Diana lenses for Nikon fit.

Many Russian are cheap and interesting (MIR, Helios, Zenit) as well as some German lenses (Praktica, Jena). It is usually cheaper to buy them with an old film SLR.

Because of the edge issues with non-retrofocus wide-angles (Leica mount etc) - I think that the SLR lenses are by far the best buy.

Not to promote any brand, but I have found Konica Hexanon SLR lenses to give v good results -- the 28f3.5, 40f1.8, 57f1.4 I currently use make a great, and relatively compact series. I have an adapter on each lens - recently bought brand X from Hong Kong at UKpounds 8 each - well made.

The very early Canon FD 35/2 (chrome nose). Probably one of the best 35mm lenses ever made. Each hand built in Japan, before mass production took over.

Here are some lenses that I found to be really top notch. That said, I mostly use the Zeiss 24mm f/1.8.

Zeiss 100mm Macro (C/Y)
Leica 90mm f/2.0 APO Asph.
M-Hex 90mm f/2.8
M-Hex 50mm f/2.0 and f/1.2
Zeiss 100-300mm (C/Y)

Avoid:
Zeiss ZM 35mm f/2.8C
Zeiss ZM 21mm f/4.5C
so so Zeiss ZM35mm f/2.0

So no wide angle recommendation?

Any SLR wide angle should be fine, although the Sigma 19 is probably as good as you'll find, outside of the ZM 18, which I believe still needs CornerFix.

Thanks for all your great replies. Unfortunately the weekend was a complete washout. I don't think it stopped raining once for 2 whole days. I managed a few indoor shots with the Nikkor 85mm and 35mm lenses.:

85mm ISO1600:

35mm all at ISO400:

I also have the Sigma 19mm which someone mentioned and is a great little performer:

All these were taken in Raw mode and processed in LR4.

The Nikkor 50 f/2 AI-S gave me very nice results on my NEX-7, and you can get one for very low money. So did the Leica 35 Summicron ASPH (not exactly cheap however).

For any SLR lens, I do recommend the Novoflex or Metabones adapter. They are heavier than most, and will help to balance the camera. The NEX is very light and the adapter is basically a big hole. The camera will become prone to lean towards. A heavy adapter will help here.

So no wide angle recommendation?
I gave up on my wide angle lenses. The CV 28mm f/2.0 is pretty good, but I'm happy with the E-Mount Zeiss.

There is one other zoom lens that was really good on all accounts. The Nikon 28-50mm f/3.5 AIS Macro was sharp, great color saturation and minimal distortion. Here is a full size test image at the long end and f/8.0

Nikon Zoom

35mm f1.4 Nikon AIs

35mm f1.4 Nikon AIs

The 35mm f1.4 AIs Nikon works well for me. I like the shallow yet sharp DofF at 1.4. Looks particularly good contrasted with the predominately OOF areas.
The overall IQ at 2.8 and 4 is excellent.

BUT

1. I already had one...even used they are expensive. I wouldn't get one just for my NEX7. (gosh it's a nicely made lens though!)

2. With full frame digital and film, 50mm is my favorite focal length. Angle of view looks just right (to me) with the NEX.
