Hello to the forum. First of all thank you for the help with the 35mm lens, i decided to invest my money on a scanner instead of a lens cause mine was also not so bad after i gave the camera a good cleaning. I now want to ask you something else. My girlfriend has her birthday in 3 weeks and i decided to gift her a nikon f100. My question now is which 50mm to get. I think she will enjoy more an af lens. The options are from the old ones 50 1.8/1.4 af-d and the new ones 50 1.8/1.4g. Which one would you choose ?

I was very surprised by the 50 1.8 af-d. Very fast, very good performance, tiny and very very cheap.

I had the 50/1.4G as well but even though it had a pleasing character is much larger, slow and more expensive and thus I would recommend the 50/1.8G if you want something better than the af-d 1.8.

The 50/1.4Af-D comes dead last. I never liked the output of that lens but maybe I have seen bad examples.

I have the 50mm 1.8 and 1.4 AF-D. The 1.4 is better built and sharper, especially wide open. I prefer it over the G version because the F100 has custom settings and you can set it to use the aperture ring on the lens instead of the wheel on the camera body.

I have the original 50/1.4 AF-Nikkor, use it on my Nikon Df these days. Bought it for my Nikon N8008. 30+ years later- no problems. It's a good performer, great for low-light on the Df.

The 50/1.8G is the most sharp of the bunch. And light. And focuses fast and silently (the SWM motor works well on the F100). And reasonably well built, on par with the 50/1.4G which costs 3 times as much, unlike the 50/1.8D.
