Hi all,

its a sunday morning, i'll be at work all day so this should obviously be a fun thing. Just for entertainment.
Which (kind of) camera did you buy for someone else, who is somewhat less enthusiastic about photography than you are? How did it turn out? Is it being used?

I'm gonna start with this.
I bought an Olympus E-PM-2 for my wife. Great little shooter, handles like a compact camera, takes pictures like a DSLR. The face detection may drive you crazy, its mostly spray-and-pray. The camera is rarely used, in fact, i think I took more pictures with it than my wife did. I actually bought a Panny 20mm f/1.7 to play around with.
I like the camera, but the take home message for me was like photography is my hobby, its not and will never be hers. 🙂
Greetings, looking forward to your answers, Klaus

First Leica

First Leica

Way, way back in university, I gave my girlfriend my first Leica, a DS M3 with a 50/2.8 Elmar. She was in art school and put it to good use.

After we got married, I gave my wife my Fuji F31fd (the Fuji F30 and successors were for a very long time the only compacts with tolerable high ISO performance, which explains why they sold for more used than originally new after they were discontinued).
After that, I got her a Panasonic GF3, then a Sony RX100, but in all cases she preferred going back to the F31fd despite it being really long in the tooth. She does take a majority of her pictures on her iPhone, though.

My wife is a painter, has a very good eye, but is not at all interested in any of the techocalities of photography and does not want to carry much load. in short she shoots "auto-everything".
I also wanted to upgrade my "always carry a camera" camera, and to make things easy I bought 2 2nd hand Sony RX100 M3's.
Nice, versatile camera's and, when the light is nog to dim, great output.

I gave my wife a Rolleiflex. She still prefers to use a Holga and Diana, and I get to use the Rolleiflex sometimes. Result!

For my wife is a DSLR, with a zoom lens. I'm alway surpassed how good the 5100 is in different light. But now she says she desires a smaller camera to have always with her.
Time for a ....

I bought an M6ttl and a 35 Summicron for a lady I was dating for some time.

She enjoyed it and used it a lot but when we mutually agreed to separate she gave it back to me.
That was completely unexpected. She told me she loved using it but because of its value didn't feel good about keeping it.

We've stayed in touch and she bought herself an M2 and lenses afterwards.

Got a Lubitel for a nephew that likes photography but never got to taste film. He uses it and likes the results, but not much (2 little kids) and where he lives it isn't easy to get it developed.

Back in 2009, I bought my wife a Canon Rebel T1i with the kit zoom. She used it until she got her first iPhone. It's been the iPhone ever since. For her, the portability and ease of uploading shots to the web trumps all else.

Back when we were struggling grad students, I bought my wife a Pentax K1000 with a 50mm f1.8 lens. She barely used it. It's in a bag... hopefully in decent shape.

After years, I got myself a Nikon Coolpix P7000 and used it for a while. Then, after getting my own Fuji X100, I gave it to my wife. She carries it everywhere, but uses it in all P (super-programmed mode).

My son (who is 6) has a Kiddie-Zoom camera made by VTech and he loves it. He hasn't filled his card completely, but I think he's very near. The gizmo can take still photographs and videos, and uses AA batteries. It also has games... Best purchase ever! 🙂

My previous post seems to have been lost. I voted other as I have never really bought one for anybody. The wife took a liking to the old Nikon D50 and kit zoom until the RX100 showed up. Now I consider it hers, but I still grab it from time to time when she is not looking.

I think the polaroid is the best fit with the other person who dont care about photography. if they want to take some photos , they will do with their smartphone , sothat let give them a funny toy like instant film camera.

I have an experience with my girl friend when I gave her a Rolleiflex and she never use that. That camera become an ornament lying dormant and got dumbstruck in a glass case.

I bought my GF one of those Leica D-LUX 3 cameras with a leather case , as far as I know she has never used it since she could not figure out any way to turn on the wifi, or post to instagram from the camera.

It is so old now, an iPhone 6s shoots far better images.
