When my son was 6, I got him a Nikon LF35 at a yard sale. He learned to use it and kept it a long time. When my daughter was 13 and did a (required) independent study with a photographer, we bought her a K1000/50 combo. She learned to frame, meter, develop, print, but once the project was over, she no longer touched it. In 2010 I bought my son a Lumix LX3, which he used a great deal and still owns, though he and his sister use their iPhones the most.

I recently found another LF35/case for $20. Guess who's going to get it (along with some Ektar and TMax) for the holidays in Kauai?

Nikon P7700

Bought my wife a Nikon P7700 a few years ago & she likes it. Was a surprise that she wanted her own camera. Was a toss up between Canon G series.
She uses it quite often. I've grabbed it a few times and after muddling through the menus and sub menus, it's a fun camera to use. Wish it had a viewfinder though.

My wife is a very good photographer - good visual sense - and I have been slowly pushing her to take on the technical aspect, i.e. get her away from I-Auto. I shoot with mirrorless interchangeable lens cameras by Olympus (alongside RF film). A year and half ago I gave my wife an Olympus E-PM2 I had outgrown, and this summer I bought her her first new camera since film days - a E-M10. She got it for her birthday. She couldn't be happier and is growing into the camera.
