first, if you can't stand those gear related threads stop reading now.

second, if you just hate those 'help me decide' threads then stop reading now.
not reading this drivel will make both of us much happier...😉

ok, now my thoughts as scattered throughout my brain.

i have been thinking about getting a cv 28/3.5 for the cl.
they are relatively cheap new and it would be less hassle than looking for a used 28 of any make.

so, while looking over the cameraquest site and checking prices, i noticed the little 25/4 and also noticed that it was priced at less than the 28.
i could buy the nicer hood with the 25 for about the same as the 28 with standard hood.
this is a good thing.

then i started thinking - never a good thing - that i already have a 25 and that i should get the 28 cause it's a bit different.

but i am liking the 25 fov...

the cl travels alone as my day to day camera.
it would be nice to have a wide on it somedays and not always just the 40.

what do you think?

of course, i could just save my money till i could afford that new zm 50/1.5...

and yes, it appears that i am not done.

Joe,

I hear your thoughts. They seem to echo my own. Scarry, eh?

Use the 25 you have. A 28, even a spiffy new one, won't make pictures very different from the 25 you have. For what it's worth, 24mm is my all time favorite wide focal length, and very nearly my all time favorite focal length period. In my brain, it's a toss up between 24mm and 105mm for most favorite focal length.

I may have missed something. Does the 25mm work on the CL?

Cheers!

I don't hate them, but I have to admit to passing by a lot of them.

Should not this read "our brains?"

then i started thinking - never a good thing

I avoid it most of the time myself too.

I came to the same conclusion, we have so much in common. 😀

The 25 doesn't couple and many say it doesn't need to because of the DOF. That is perfectly true but I ended up swapping my 25/4 for the ZM. One reason was the speed but mainly because it felt so unnatural using the normal finder with the RF patch being "off". I found it too distracting. Not a problem if you use an external finder but that goes against the pocketability.

The 28 is very close to the 40. If you used a 50, it might be different. Why not a second hand 25 or 28 and then you can have another sale if you don't like it.

i don't see many used cv 28s and maybe only a few more 25s, that's mostly why i was thinking new.
i find the cv 40 a long 40 so i think the 28/25 will be enough of a difference.
the zm 25 fits on the cl but seems big.
plus i just wanted a small knockabout kit for everyday as in yesterday my day bag got turned over a eveything in it got spilled out, including the cl w/ lens. no harm done but...

FWIW:

You already have arguably the best 25 (24)mm lens.

I would get the 28mm CV if you think there is enough of a difference from the 40mm. You also will not need an auxiliary finder with the CL. Lastly, it just makes a very nice, small combo (which would be spoiled by having a VF on top.

If not, get the 21mm. This will be the next step in your progression, anyway 🙂 , and the other 21mm options (ZI, Leica) are just exorbitantly priced.

21 is way tooooo wide for me.

i would guestimate on the cl with either the 28 or 25.

i am a sloppy worker.

ok, i went for the cv 28/3.5 for the little cl.

i thought i'd be content with a 40/90 combo but i rarely use the 90 and it now sits in the zi camera bag as part of a 'full' kit.
the cl with 40 is my everyday camera and i thought a 28 would be a good partner for those wide days.

hi Joe

hi Joe

Sounds like a good setup.

For my UWA work, I'm hooked on 18mm, but do it with an SLR. For 28, I'd need faster for indoors and short DOF, but 3.5 could work as an outdoor lens or with flash.

Does the 28 couple on the CL, or do you just scale focus?

Good to hear, I've always liked the sharpandcontrasty looks on the CV lenses. You should be really happy with that lens, and should you ever get tired of it, it will hold its value quite well.
