Would you choose as your first lens for a R3M: a 40mm f1.4 nokton mc or a 25mm f4 skopar+viewfinder?
My idea is to travel with the camera for a while, so... street photography it's going to be.

25mm would be my vote on a r4a/m. So I'd say 40mm for r3a/m. Very nice angle of view and between my favorites of 35 and 50mm.

Oh and the faster glass might be better for an all around lens too.

If it were me, I'd choose the 40mm f1.4. The faster glass gives you so much more flexibility when the light is low but you want to get the shot.

I find the two options a little at the edge for travel and street, and I would consider 35 and 28 two more natural choices. It all depends on your stile at this point, 25 falls on the wide side and could be useful for inclusive shots of the street kind - if you like to get close. The 40 seems a little more flexible, also in terms of low light. I would choose the 40 for the more natural look and low light abilities.

The 40/1.4 is a killer lens. Really good and a great match for the R3*.

40 and 3 were made for each other.

The CV 40SC was my first lens and still my favorite and most useful.
