The 40/1.4VC has worst boke of any lens I have ever seen, nevermind the oddball FL. As stated above, a sure shot is the Canon 35/2.0.

Hi Thea;
Welcome to RFF. You have some fine lenses already. Are you looking for something different than what you have? If so, then I'd recommend trying a very wide lens or a lens in a FL you already have but with a faster aperature in order to try out those lens signatures. xray is rightfully high on the ZM lenses; the ZM 28/2.8 is strangely becoming one of my regular use street lenses on my M2, just using the entire VF to frame. I thnk Roland for recommending the lens to me. Or, for a still wider POV, you may like the VC 15/4.5; I am just starting to enjoy using this lens, as it has opened up new vistas to a crusty old 5cm FL lover. But that said, as you claim to have a fondness for the 3.5 cm FL, I would recommend the VC 35/1.2. It has a gorgeous signature, the OOF areas are delicious and creamy; in addition you can shoot the beast off in candle light without a flash.
Have a blast making your decision!

Tomasw is right about the CV 35 1.2. I also have one and really love the lens. I don't generally carry it unless I need to pull out all the stops and shoot under very low light. It excells wide open and is about as flare resistant aas one can find. Beautifully made and super performer. Many will say it's just too big and heavy and it is larger than the 35 1.4 asph summilux bit it's also the fastest 35 for 35mm and made of brass. It's really a fine lens. I had the coveted 50 1.2 Noctilux for a number of years and shot a 50 f1 Noctilux for a year and a half where I worked in the 70's. I can honestly say the CV 35 1.2 outperforms both the Leica Noctilux 50's and is a much more usable FL.
The 15 CV is a really fine lens. I rarely use mine but did this past week. It always amazes me at how good this tiny lens is.
Come to think of it I have never had a bad experience with any CV glass and would like to get a pancake II 35 one day just to carry on my old M6 beater.
No experience with the Zeiss 28 but would expect it to perform like a champ.

Paul: Not to start a bokeh discussion, but I
believe the recent example on pnet was pathological
(sample dependent ?) - my 40 Noktons behave better than that.
Here is a Canon 35/2 photo (v1, maybe v2 is better ....). I had it,
it has high resolution, but to these eyes worse boke than anything else I ever
used. Plus I can not recommend it mechanically.

Wow. Nobody's suggested the 50 Summilux?
If you're budget-conscious, forget it. If not, either that, or the 50mm Summicron. Any version; I don't think any of them will disappoint you.
If you really are on a tight budget, try to find either the 35mm f/1.7 CV Ultron or the 35mm f/2.5 CV Pancake Skopar II. You can't go wrong there.
