Hi folks, I trying to see what is the best value NEX camera (does not have to be the latest) to use legacy lenses with.
Preference:
- no EVF needed
- tilt screen
- better high ISO compared to M4/3
- max $250 (cheaper is better of course)
- fokus peaking
- sweep panorama

nex 5n. you can get a used mint condition for almost nothing. Great camera, great low ISO performance. Better suite for legacy wide angle lenses.

You may get lucky finding an NEX-5n (body only) for $300.
If you can do without touch-screen, digital first curtain shutter, slightly easier to hold body
then an NEX-C3 would be your best bet. You can find those for $250 pretty easily.
Doesn't have as low of an ISO setting or as high as NEX-5n, i think it's lowest is 200 vs 100 and highest being 3200 not 6400 or something like that.
Contains same sensor as NEX-5n, so performance is pretty similar.

I've been told the Leica WATE works okay with the 7, without the magenta color casts, but i'm not looking to blow that much money right now.
However, there are plugins to fix the casting, but that is more of a headache for me.
Wish I had done more research in that regard before purchasing my 7. So now I mainly use it for my Helios lens.

Thanks for the responses. Seems like 5N is the preference. Though ebay seems to price them close to $400; which is more than I want to spend on the body...

I'd agree the 5N is probably the best body for your stated needs & you might pick up a used one somewhere for $250 if you look in the right place at the right time.

I've got the original Nex 5 (the Nex 5 Classic
) and it goes up to 12800. I don't expect the 5n to be any lower.Here is an example at iso 12800 with the Sigma 19/2.8:
Handling is about the same as the 5n, but the EVF doesn't work. I don't feel the need to upgrade. However, the 5n sensor is supposed to be friendlier to M-mount and Leica-screw-mount wide angle lenses.

The C3 is your best bet if you want to stay below $300.

Sounds like it wouldn't work for you given your price point, but for others who may be wondering, I'll mention the newer NEX-5R (as I just did in a similar thread w/r/t the NEX-6 vs NEX-7).
I chose it for use with manual legacy glass over the 5N. They are essentially identical -- same body, same sensors, both have touch screen live view zoom, no color issues with wide manual glass, etc. -- but the 5R adds a shutter speed dial (like those on the NEX-6/7) and function button that make shooting with old lenses much easier. Is it worth the approximately $250 additional cost for a new 5R over a used 5N? I don't know, but I took the long view and chose the one that would work best for me. Of course, as they filter into the used market and new bodies emerge, the cost difference will narrow.
With the high ISO capabilities of these cameras, I've settled into shooting on auto iso while easily changing aperture (on the lens, of course) and shutter speed (on the nice, big dial) with ease. Manually adjusting ISO requires just a tap of the right side of the wheel and spin without moving your finger. And the function button makes it quite quick and easy to change WB, choose black and white (it's really cool to see shots on the LCD that way, and it does a really nice conversion with no editing), etc.
Heck, with the small lens lineup I settled on -- PEN 20mm/3.5, Voigtlander 35mm/1.4, and collapsible Summar 50mm/2 -- I can easily shoot fully manually with just one hand. (Put my thumb on the shutter, index finger on the lens, flip up/raise the screen, and hold at waist level.) And the whole setup fits easily in my jacket pockets.

seems like some wide angles have gotten okay results with the latest update to the firmware.
however, i happened to pick the lens with the worst outcome---the CV 15mm

NEX-5N is the undisputed choice at your price point and for the wide range of legacy glass support you are looking for. It also leaves you the option of buying an EVF down the line.
