I want to upgrade from a Vivitar 2000 flash that I am currently using to a Nikon flash. I want to have more control over the exposure and more power as well. I am considering SB 28. Will it work with the R-D1? What is the availability of this flash in stores? Is there a more recent flash that is equally suitable?

Please help.

Any flash should be able to work with R-D1 with A or M mode, and SB-28 is just fine. Just don't buy the flashes without the A mode, you will be stuck with M mode only on R-D1.

If for any reason you want to buy only Nikon brand flash, I am supposing that you may get a Nikon DSLR in the future. For this reason, SB-800 is the only option for you, which supports A & M modes, as well as Nikon TTL, 3D-Matrix TTL, D-TTL, and the newest i-TTL. SB-600 is fine, but no A mode.

the nikon 28 works well with my rd1. the ease of using the flash's auto & manual modes make it very easy to work with.
