Which Nikon?

It's a 21. Found a photo of Jackie Stewart with the same setup:

Maybe even the same race? 1966 Monaco Gramd Prix.

That's pretty cool and gives a bit better angle on the electrical connection.

Looking around on that link led me to Jackie Stewart with an even more ungainly looking set up:

Whatever that lens on the Nikon might be, it's been whacked around a few times from the dents on the rim.

Hill is only driver ever to win the so-called Triple Crown: 24 Hours of Le Mans, Indianapolis 500 and the Monaco Grand Prix. Juan Pablo Montoya has won the latter two, and Fernando Alonso has won the first and the last; he nearly won the 500 in 2017 and is trying again this weekend...retired racers who have won 2 of 3 include AJ Foyt. Bruce McLaren also won 2/3.

He "died in action" as I recall, but which race? Agree about his neck muscles -- especially considering the G forces involved.

He died in the crash of a light aircraft he was piloting, in circumstances he was not trained for and was sufficiently out of his training that his insurance company refused to pay and the other crash victims families sued his estate

He was trained, but his instrument license had expired. Like most small plane crashes, it was likely pilot error.

Mother Of All Bolexes.
JFC that is a big battery.
What does this rig weight? 10kg?
How is is supposed to drive and rotate the lens?

That's nuts! An F1 car can easily pull 4G's in the corners, even more at circuits like Spa-Francorchamps. I cannot imagine having that neck breaker on while driving.

I do have an old VHS tape of Sir Stewart driving the old Nürburgring (22km, 160 turns) - the camera was mounted on the car.

That is a Kodak K-100 Turret with three of the larger, faster Cine-Ektar lenses available. I have one of those cameras sitting right next to me and it weighs a good 8-9lbs with three lenses on. The K-100 motor is a large unit which doubles its size but it isn't featured in the photo. The spring-wound clockwork motor was probably removed and replaced with a 24fps motor which the sealed battery on the left side of the helmet is powering. No clue how the driver would turn that turret, and therefore, why the extra lenses are even mounted.

Cars from that era weren’t pulling that many Gs, and I doubt those contraptions were used at speed in any case

From what I have read, all of these helmet camera setups were only used in practice runs. Even a leisurely half throttle lap would still put a lot of stress on the drivers neck.
