I have read so many conflicting posts about lenses, like the collapsibles, that would damage an M8 that I don,t know what the truth is. Does any one no for sure which lenses will and won,t work? Thanks. Gary

The DR Summicron can't be mounted in the normal-infinity range. it must be mounted and used in close focus range only.
The collapsibles can be used but as a precaution they must be mounted in their extended position and a rubber o-ring or some type of buffer a few millimeters thick should be stretched over the barrel to act as a bumper between the optical group and the focusing mount. This will give enough distance to ensure that the shutter isn't damaged.
I've heard that the 90 collapsible Elmar shouldn't be collapsed ever but don't have experience with it.
Some collapsibles just can't focus correctly on the digital M bodies either. Not without a good amount of adjustment.
The 21mm Super Angulons can't accurately meter and they produce colored vignetting but they are superb lenses regardless.

The new collapsible lenses work superb on the M8. I have a collapsible 90 mm Elmar (macro).

Collapsible lenses "work". Just don't collapse them when mounted on the M8.

Summitar, Elmar M, early Elmar 5cm can all be mounted and safely collapsed. I think the main one to avoid is the 1950s/60s 90mm Elmar.

Elmar 50/2.8:
- No problem with my 1962 copy (# 11112).
- No problem either with my later copies from 1994 (with M6J) and 2004 (# 11831) but the rear part of the 'tube' is larger than that of earlier Elmars so that it can damage the internal flocking of the camera or possibly the roll cam of the rangefinder if the tube wobbles in the mount and/or if the lens is mounted or removed when it is still collapsed.
- None of them will touch the shutter curtain though.

Collapsible Elmar 90/4 from the fivetees:
- Never collapse it as its 'tube' does touch something into the body. The shutter curtain i guess. Just tried once, never did it again. 😱

Soviet Jupiter-12s have a huge protruding rear element, so its an extremely close fit.
Always mount one for the first time with extreme care, slight production differences would be enough for it to contact the shutter and scratch the rear element of the lens.
I have a silver mid-60s Jupiter-12 that does mount safely on my M8 - YMMV.

I think the new collapsible 90 / latest collapsible 50 elmarit are okay -- they don't collapse as far as the old 90mm elmar / 50 cron.

Lol, well Leica can repair the shutter easier than it is to find a good Jupiter..
That is being cruel, the Jupiter 12 is a very nice lens and it does fit. I have never come across different versions of the design as the lens itself is a copy of a pre war Zeiss so I think the chance of there being manufacturing differences is very slim.

Two responses:
A. I just slowly and carefully collapsed my 50mm Collapsible Summicron into my M8. It didn't hit or touch anything on the way in.
B. I don't see why collapsing a lens has anything to do with window cleaning fluid. Care to rethink this?

Tried a pre asph summarit 35mm think Canada made type 3... Could not focus to infinity..
Sort of similar issue to rigid.. Seller say no issue on m9 ...

You mean a Summilux? I have a sample of one of the latest 35 Summilux to have an infinity lock. It can be used on the M9 perfectly but the light baffle at the back of the rear element protrudes too far and hits the inside of the chamber on the M8 since it's physically smaller than the full frame camera's "film" chamber. Some of these lenses have variations in the size of the light baffle so some work perfectly and others have to be modified.

Yup summilux ,typo 🙂.. Wat a waste it dirt cheap and mint condition as well. Very stiff at infinity. Dare not risk my m8... Heard the. German version works well thought
