Good images both, but in my opinion N°2 is stronger because is fresher and more unusual, the colors, the place, the body position of the man and look at his hands!
N°1 is more a classical style portrait, well made but already seen many times...just my opinion which could be wrong...

Crop on #1 improves it. The comment re desaturation on #2 is spot-on for me. I would submit #2 as a contest entry after knocking down the saturation and contrast, keeping the burn on the figure. #1 is a fine portrait but it likely won't break out of the pack, while #2 may. GOod luck!

The first one cropped square to remove the area above the head with the red pole and below the brass button–will make it more intense.

I agree...if you crop out the red in the upper part of the photo it gets much stronger...
I agree. The pole above his head is distracting. Crop that out and it's a much better image.
Thanks

First one - interesting looking man, fully engaged with the camera.
The second one doesn't do much for me - some guy in a colourful tunnel that is massively barrel distorted. Who is he? Why is he there? What's the context?
Everyone's a critic, I know.

One, but if it is typical FB contest where you begging people for votes it could be two or anything.

Thanks again, to all for the help / critiques. Looks like I misread the rules, so I have until midnight tonight (not noon) to submit. So I will have time to chew off ALL of my fingernails, thinking about this.
I sent the photos to friends that I trust and most everyone says to go for the Leather Man. My main concern with this, is is it interesting enough for a contest. While the second photo, is much more my style. I trip out looking at it. After I shot it, I said, "Man! You are wearing the exact same colors as the wall!" Even the seams on his vest are the same shape as the tiles. His bags match etc… I felt lucky to catch that.
rwintle: I didn't even think about barrel distortion until you said that. The man is actually standing against a round wall, not in a tunnel….but I see what you mean.
Both these fellows were very nice. The leather clad guy was puzzled. "Why Me? What made you single me out?"
Anyway, I'm rambling here. I think I have been staring at these images too long.
It is hard to argue with the poll results….

I like both for different reasons, but IMO #1 has more impact. As suggested by others, I would crop tighter to remove the red areas.

Right. I had shut off my Facebook for years, and I had to re-activate it yesterday. :bang: Assuming I actually make it through the Facebook votes, (which is a long shot) I'm wondering which photo a judge would prefer.

the first one, intense, direct; soft background contrasts with the intensity of foreground.

While the portrait has a directness and honesty to it ,it fails to hold my interest for long. The other image is far more interesting, having included a background that has interacted with the subject,or the subject with it,sugesting a connection between the digital and analogue.
