Which Sigma DP focal length?

Understand and agree with your requirements Doug. From what little I've seen of the Samsung NX, it looks less like it is competing with other serious compacts - such as the DPx, GRD, LXx, etc - and more like it's taking on the mini dSLRs - e420, G1, etc. Again I could be wrong but the NX doesn't look that pocketable. But I hear you about the interchangeable lenses...and hence why I initially cocked by brow at the Oly m4/3 compact....but there is something about that Fovean sensor I like the look of...

No word on when it's supposed to ship yet.

It can focus down to 28cm (interestingly about the same as the DP1)... which should give it something like 1:6 or 1:7 magnification. Can anyone more knowledgeable about calculating that confirm?

The DP-2 has a focal length of 24.2mm..

This means that to achieve a close focus of 28cm, it needs about 2.6mm helicoid extention. That gives a ratio of 2.6/24.2, in other words, ca. 1:9.5 magnification..

Don't let the focal length multiplier confuse you.. I.e. don't use the 41mm quoted to inform you about what field of view you can expect in 35mm format terms.

Thanks to all for your responses. Well seeing as the DP2 is ready for pre-order on Amazon and Adorama, it should be a matter of weeks until we here in Australia share in the experience. The USD649 price tag is very encouraging...and makes it more reasonable than I first feared.

So I think I am pretty much sold on the DP2. Not sure if it was the idea of a digital Canonet...or digital CL/E...but now I'm just plain keen!

So as not to confuse the issue of different FOV, Perspective does not change with different cameras, lens etc...Perspective only changes when the photographer moves..even a little bit.

The idea of changing FOV is to maintain the original perspective and adjust the FOV by changing lenses...

Not trying to step on toes but it's an all important issue when discussing FOV....

You're right.
Maybe the correct term would have been view compression - the perceived distance between objects in the foreground and background.
