White Milky Substance on film

So I just developed two rolls of acros in diafine, one after the other. the first one looks fine (except for my dodgy exposures), the second has a white, milky (although solid, can't see through it) line running down one side only (I can see the frame numbers on the other side). It is not moveable, but it is definitely a liquid mark, there are splashes. I am a bit annoyed because the shots turned out well (from what I can see), and I am wondering if anyone has any idea what has caused this and if there's anything I can do about it? I guess worst comes to worst I'll just have to crop the bottom off the images.

Both the developer and fixer are fresh (obviously, as the first roll was fine). I am very puzzled. I will scan the images and post them up when the negs dry.

Bad fixer, IMO.
Try refixing...

Did you really, REALLY, like something on that roll of film? A girl's picture, perhaps?

Too little fluid in one of the developer baths perhaps?

That sounds like a chemical stain. I just can't recall what chemical(s) that would have been from. Where I recall seeing it is when the film is would on the reel wrong and touches itself.

It sounds like you are saying it runs the whole roll. It may have been wound wrong on the reel, where the chemicals couldn't get to it well. Especially as I see someone above said, the fixer.

Yes, as noted above, it really sounds like a fixer problem. I'd venture a guess that this roll was the top one in a two reel tank, and you didn't pour in enough fixer. The splashes you see would be from your agitation.

Try refixing it as soon as possible.

I'll agree with the not enough fixer in the tank diagnosis. Refix and maybe salvage the roll, but if it's been too long in the light ... well, good luck any way!

Well unfortunately It's been out for about 11 hours now, I'm not going to bother. Am a bit annoyed but the shots are still salvageable if I crop them. Will try adding a greater volume of fixer to the tank next time- although I added as much for the second roll as I did for the first, and the first was fine... it was cheap arifix fixer though, anyone know if that may have been the problem?

Oh an valdemar, as much as gears and rope excites me, I doubt I found them that exciting 🙂
