I've been there and I'm almost always by myself when it happens. Too many distractions when I'm with someone else.

Yep, the zone is actually a common state of mind - sportsmen get it (particularly in individual and adrenaline sports like motor racing). I get it when I'm taking photos occasionally, but more often I'll get zoned driving or playing computer games. Its a higher state of consciousness where you aren't concentrating on what you are doing - your body goes on autopilot and the mind flies. With racing drivers its essential - I saw a documentary a while back explaining that the very best (Schumacher, Senna, etc.) devote virtually no thought to actually driving the car
Its moving in to other sports - the football team I support has just started yoga classes for the players, with most of the focus on the mental side of yoga (and of course stretching and manipulation...)

I'm rather a shy person, although externally I don't look shy at all, yet I have these "zoned" moments where I completely become careless about any fears or whatever else, losing my shyness and not caring no matter how large the crowd can be. I just aim and shoot... These are always great moments
And it's better with an RF than with an SLR
It happens to me also when I'm practising sports (especially when I was doing Sambo) and also sometimes when I'm playing first-person-shooting computer games.

Guess the psychological terminus technicus of what we are talking about is Flow (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Flow_%28psychology%29).
But I like the terminus "the zone". Gives "zone-focused" a whole new meaning.
And yes, I also enter that zone from time to time, a state of happiness. Unfortunatly not as often as I'd like to.
