Who is best?

I rent, so no homeowners insurance.

I have progressive auto - they don't offer this sort of thing.

I have a few m's, and a handful of leica glass.

cheers!

asmp and a host of other associations offer insurance, but as far as non-organizational private insurance, I'd actually like to know that as well.

In the US, Illinois, I have my business liability/accident idemnity insurance through State Farm. With that I also have my office equipment insured, and a rider that covers my photo equipment when travelling or otherwise out of the office.

It's not cheap, but it's not bad either. I have liked the service I've received (but then, I've never made a claim on it either... so who knows?).

Even renting, you can often get renter's insurance and at least cover it against theft from the apartment.

(All my comments apply to the US only)

You can get homeowners insurance, even if you rent. (In fact, many apartment buildings I've lived in wouldn't rent to me unless I had homeowners insurance.) I think the premiums are better if you are the owner of a property versus a renter.

If you are in the USA...

It's called "Renter's Insurance" if you rent. Surprising to some, I suppose. "Homeowner's Insurance" is for, uh, homeowners.

There are a variety of options to consider, along with your agent. Replacement Cost or Cash Value, deductibles, liability limits, and riders for specialized equipment such as cameras, jewelry, firearms, etc that exceed coverage limits. Such insurance may also cover you if you have your camera stolen from your car - ask your agent.

Get renter's insurance. Most camera stuff is covered under a basic policy (ask to be sure). Take pictures and copy down the serial numbers of everything and email it to yourself.

It's nice to have money to replace stuff that gets damaged or stolen, but the real reason to have insurance is to prevent your landlord from recovering from you personally if you burn the building down.

Not to disagree with you, because you are right, but IMHO, even further - good to have Renter's Insurance (or Homeowner's Insurance if you own your home) is for the liability and accident insurance that comes with it. Someone trips over your cat and you lose everything you own and everything you will ever own. Property can be replaced - civil judgments follow you around for the rest of your life.

My wife and I have homeowner's insurance AND we have so-called 'umbrella coverage' that gives us a cool 3 million in liability. We have neighbors with kids that skateboard across our front porch when we're not around to chase 'em off, and we have dogs - imagine if one of them decided to take a bite out of one of the nasty kids. I shudder to even think about it. Insurance is not cheap. Not having it can be even more expensive.

You're right, Bill. Occupier's liability is a good reason to have renter's insurance as well, especially if you're required to clean off your sidewalk or entrance way. People slip on ice and see dollar signs.

My camera equipment is mostly covered by my home contents insurance, although, if I were to take everything out at once, I could be over the personal possessions limit. They insure me for £1.5k for each item, and would count a camera body as being different from an attached lens (I checked).

i guess ending the comment with a Cheers has been a bad call.

Im in chicago, il. USA.
the insurance is for working with my cameras here, but im planning to go do some traveling for some months, so i want a good insurance with full coverage so i can not worry wherever im @ in the world.

thanks!

My policy, as good as it is, doesn't cover international. I have to get a travel rider specifically when I travel abroad. Unfortunately not often enough. I need to travel more. 🙂

ali_baba - I'm in Chicago too. You should join up for one of the meets sometime.

Cheers,
