who is done? and how do you know?

I don't really see why people feel they should quit buying things. I said in the #photogeeks channel on Freenode IRC a couple nights ago that I've gotten a new philosophy as far as gear acquisition is concerned: buy what you feel you need, sell what you *don't* need, and go take pictures.

While I toy off-and-on with the idea of getting a Konica "dualie" 17/35mm M-Hex for my Hexar kit, and a non-motorized M body may likely be in my future, I think I'm essentialy "done" (as in "not seriously wanting for anything"). Even on the digital side, I have what I need (and for free, at that). There's always the possibility of having something fall into my lap, so I won't say "no" if someone hands off, say, a C8080 (which would replace my Olympus D-510Z), or an F3 body (which would replace my OM-2n...wouldn't mind something with interchageable finders as well as screens). What's nice is that, while the above makes clear that there are a few things I wouldn't mind having, with only two exceptions, (1) they would replace stuff I already have, and (2), they're blissfully few in number. I've always liked the "less is more" mantra, but it's only in the last handful of years that I've started walking the talk.

I keep coming back to this thread and ponder about and mostly I still feel pretty happy with what I've got ... but then I read Barret's post and think, a Hexar would complement that CL really well too wouldn't it ... ?

You are "done" when you know you have the tools to do your work/art.

Anything more is excess.

I thought I was done (related to gear), but it was just a case of lying to myself as I´m aware Í won´t be done until I get all the Contax stuff I want.
And once I got all this, what´s next?

Ernesto

Then you will be aware that, you won't be done until you get all the Leica stuff you want

Sometimes going out taking pictures makes me 'undone', realizing there's a better solution. E.g with the IIIf / 5cm indoors: a M2 with 3.5cm would be much better; Horizont after another leaks / film rip: I need a Widelux; ...

What I don't get is why I lust for a FM2n when I'm actually not using SLRs.

I`m in remission, but I had a relapse last week, I acquired 2 GSN Yashicas. One I purchased,$23.75AUD, the other was a freebie. Then of cause I had to buy battery converters, filters, lens caps,oh and one of them needs a camera case, tri-pod ect. ect. ect.

I thought I was done until the Zeiss-Ikon hit the market! I mean just look at it! So perfect, so beautiful... too beautiful, I'd never leave the house with it, lest it bang into a building or a drop of condensation water from an air-conditioner drip upon it and sully it's perfection..
excuse me while I breathe into this crumpled paper bag for a while..

Haven't read all the messages yet, but I KNOW I'm not done. I'd like a ZI, I'd like an M6. Never had a Canon P yet, or held the MP. I figure as long as I have cash flow, I'll have GAS.

I realized I enjoy the feelings I get when I use manual focus and setting f stop.
So now I just ordered a new Pentax K100. I only have manual focus K mount lenses. ...

I've been having the same feeling, so let us know what you think of the K100.

How do we know? A great literary figure put it this way:

As we know,
There are known knowns.
There are things we know we know.
We also know
There are known unknowns.
That is to say
We know there are some things
We do not know.
But there are also unknown unknowns,
The ones we don't know
We don't know.

I wish RFF had a "GAS Clinic" section for those of us who want to be done, think they can, but keep clicking on the Classifieds link... any doctors out there?
