Who Is Listening To Vinyl?

My dad is a big fan of music so we've got a lot of lp's in our house. I suppose there's close to 1000 lp's on the shelf. Lot of different artists and genres but mainly progressive rock music from the seventies. I listen to them occasionally and like their sound better. Or maybe it's because I have to change those albums all the time, I don't know 🙂

Oh god, I don't know what to do with them when I inherit my father.

Not one of the things I'm most proud of, but it's still kind of cool--I've got a Realistic 8-track player/recorder hooked up to my stereo. And a bunch of 8-track tapes.

I've got a bunch, mostly opera. I have a couple of Victrolas, a Sonora, and a Birch picnic player. (Turntables, 8-track, wind-up phonographs, reel-to-reel; I think about the only thing I don't have is a wire recorder! 🙄)
 
I have about 1,000 LPs, the vast majority purchsed at thrift stores in the late '90s / eqrly '00's. Got some GREAT vinyl for two bits each. Used vinyl is often damaged, but after some duds, I found I could be 80-90% confident just from appearance. There's a certain 'look' to good vinyl, and telltale signs of abuse and/or worn/misaligned carts.

Thorens TD-145 w/ Goldring 1042 (I think); HH Scott 355 tuner/preamp, homebrew PP 6B4G tube amps, and JBL L300 sort-of clones (using Edgar horns).
 
You must be an old geezer if you remember vinyl..

I never stopped playing my LP's even though I have many of them on CD

How many still remember when they were hi-fi??
 
I bought my first record when I was about 7 years old. Never saw any reason to stop buying or playing them, so I still do both. I buy CDs too, but I like records more.

Oh, just ordered a Jethro Tull album, 'Thick as a Brick', on vinyl off eBay. Inspired by this thread, of course. Now I just need to pick up a preamp so I can actually listen to my shabby collection of LPs.

Is it something about us RFFers that makes us to like similar things: vintage RF cameras, bicycling, vinyls... Something in common. A way of life. Not necessarily better than others, just different than most.

I still have my Rega Planar 3 with Elyse mm cartridge, amp is a Cyrus 2 with PSX. Speakers are Kef Q65s. I love the sound it all produces.

Unfortunately my house does not have room for it all with the surround setup so the turntable and amp doesn't get out much these days so its in the loft. Reading this thread though, I might just hook it all up again.

Brings back memories of pawing through the bins and doing the inspection when something interesting showed it's face. Certainly something missing in a used CD store compared to the great old record stores. Was at a big new/used shop in Sebastopol CA two weeks ago that had that feeling, but there aren't many like that...
 
I have plenty of vinyl ... actually I still can't get rid of the 2000 or so I own (about 150 I actually listen to)

I prefer old Funk, Jazz, and decent classical live recordings

in fact I have a turn table hooked up to weather-sealed speakers in my shower so I can listen to records in the shower 😛

Though most of my music is in MP3 form ... but nothing is better than firing up the amp, turn table and blaring my Wharedales
 
Haven't played any vinyl in about a week. I've been slowly amassing all new vinyl, especially imports, for the last 10 years. You haven't heard Radiohead unless it's played from the canadian lps (all 10" double disc issues).

I still listen to "old" LPs and other (even shellac!!!!) say 78 RPM records.....
I still have one GE VR II variable reluctance magnetic cartridge ..... (and some other relics........)
And two turntables, plus a fully analog solid state receiver from the late ´70s
.........

Besides I have may CDs......

The only thing(s) I ever collected seriously were records. Have a few thousand LP's and 45's. All the 78's are now gone as is my old BMI Jukebox. Now getting rid of the records. They take up too much space and it's just time to let go. Coincidentally, I have a friend who owns a frame/art shop. I've been trading the more collectable pieces for framing my prints as well as other art pieces. It's all working out. By the by, I have a working BSR turntable complete w/ nice walnut cabinet for trade....it play 78's, 45's and LP's. From what I understand, it's the record "changer" on the market (c. 1955 or so).
 
I just saw a turntable with a USB connector to input to your computer at Costco!!!!

I have a large moving box full of old 33 1/3 and some older 78s from my grandparents I would love to get into my iPod.

I may be an anachronist, but I love the sound of my Linn LP12 and I love the look of my b&w (film) photos shot with a rangefinder. I'm sure there's lots of technical specs. that can be quoted that say digital is more accurate, but frankly I don't care - it if ain't broke, don't fix it.

I still have the means to play vinyl, but cd's are pretty much the standard around here. I have a Rekokut, a Marantz pre amp, and a Rotel power amp. I have several direct-to-disc recordings that come out every now and then-Woody Herman, Benny Goodman, Glenn Miller-Nothing like it. Like an M3. Stu
