Who lives in Arizona?

I second that copake_ham, AZ Highways has great photography (Jack Dykinga and the likes) and the articles are sometimes good too! The U of A hosts the Center for Creative Photography (CCP) as I'm sure you know - they have Ansel Adam's collection as well as those of Edward Weston, Harry Callahan and others - you'll find me there at least once a month. They change the main exhibit quite often - the last one I saw was fantastic - Adams, Weston, Friedlander, Winogrand, Brassai, Sommer, Strand...... - they have quite the collection.

Thanks for coming back on my comment. For the life of me I couldn't recall the correct name of the CCP last night (must be due to that purple liquid I was drinking 😕 )

Because my wife and I are still only part timers I have yet to get to the CCP. When we are there the weather is always too nice and we are bicyclists - so enjoy out of door activities. Once we spend more time in Tucson we will take in some of the indoor activities.

In fact, that's one of the "frustrations" of being in Tucson. The weather is almost always so nice that you don't have to come up with a list of "rainy day" indoor alternative activities!

BTW, Nick, our home is near Sunrise and Kolb. Where are you located?

George

When I'm out on the motorcycle it seems as though nine times out of ten, no matter where else I might be, I find my way through Arizona and never by accident. I remember heading east on 64 out of the Grand Canyon early one morning and watched the sun come up over the Painted Desert; it was one of the most stunningly beautiful scenes that I have never photographed in my life...although it did cause me to get on the cell-phone as soon as I had a signal and describe it to my wife, who ordinarily gets up around 10:00 😀!

George,
I'm in Chandler but my girlfriend is in Tucson so I spend a fair amount of time down there. Apparently there is a Meatyard exhibit at the CCP at the moment - should be worth checking out.

Very fine.

Sounds like it might be the Meatyard exhibit that was here in NYC at the ICP a few months back. Didn't get to it while here - maybe I'll get a 2nd chance next month in Tucson.

I was in Tucson for a summer. I like the landscape over there. It has character. A place where you can just go away into the wild (once in a whle 🙂) and be happy. If that sort of thing catches your imagination. I went to mount Lemmon often. It would feel deliciously cool up there even in the middle of summer. A land of contrasts.
But don't leave your film on the dashboard!

I'm a long time resident of Tucson. There is a multitude of interesting things to photograph in the state. I can go from desert cactus to pine covered mountain forest in a little over an hour of driving. For a real hoot drive down to Tombstone, Az. "The town too tough to die" and too lazy to get a real job. There is an "Old" section of Tombstone that is pretty cool. The locals dress up in period costumes and stage fake gunfights . The OK corral is still there but you have to pay to see it these days. And a little farther down the road from there is Bisbee,Az. which is also very interesting from a photo point of view.

And there is the nightly spectacular sunsets. I've lived here for over 40 years and I still see sunsets that will stop your breath on a regular basis. In the months of Jan. and Feb. I take the view camera up to Gate's Pass and stalk the perfect sunset photo. During those months the sunset is almost centered between the twin foothils of the pass and the view is across a huge plain to another mountain range behind which the sun sets.

And then there is the north end of the state with the Grand canyon and the Sedona,Az. /Flagstaff area.

Yeah, Arizona is a keeper!

I'm a new P/T resident of Tucson and can tell you -- I'm envious and wish I was a "long time" resident.

The crazy development is scary (is everyone from CA going to move to AZ?) but you can understand why if you visit.

And "ditto" on visiting Bisbee - it's where they've used the dry heat to preserve "the '60's". 😎

I'm sitting in upstate NY - and, yes, enjoying a nice cold, clear evening after a 9 inch snowfall yesterday. But I sure would like to be able to walk out on to my nice warm patio in Tucson right now....

Well it not all that warm at the moment. Its pretty cold for Tucson anyway. All last week the overnight temps were in the low 30's. So you'd have to walk out on the porch with a sweater on at least. Its in the 50's right now. I know this is not cold as many further east and north would view it. But its as cold as it usually gets here. 😀

In the old section of Bisbee they have a "Museum" of sorts with photo's and artifacs going back to the early mining town days. Big old two story store front property. It's worth a look if you are in Bisbee

It may be too late to warn you but did you kow that AZ drivers are notoriously mean? Maybe less so in Tucson but in Phoenix you really need to watch out. If you've ever lived in a place where drivers are curteous, may as well forget it now 🙂. Not sure why that is...

Yes, that is the one thing that is noticably a problem - apparently throughout AZ.

In Tucson, if there were only two cars in the entire city - the one in the back would be tailgating the one in the front! :bang:

Oh man, I can't wait to get back to Oregon. I can't stand it here. Urban Sprawl everywhere. Strip mall everywhere. What did I do ? :bang: Oh please tell me this is justa dream 🙂

To quote Joni Mitchell: "They paved paradise and put up a parking lot!"

Much as I still love it - it is sadly true that AZ is becoming a FL.

UGH!!!

I guess you live and work somewhere near me in Chandler, it has no character. It is not pretty (I'm renting, I would not live in this part of town permanently) that is why I get out of town every weekend! Give the state a chance though, check out the Superstition Mts (only about 40mins east), go see Jerome and Bisbee etc. AZ is a great place to be, it is unfortunate I need to live in the Valley for my work.

Having lived in Arizona all my life (and I'm 55) all I can say with respect to the drivers is that about 85 out of a hundred moved here from somewhere else and no doubt learned their driving habits wherever they came from. Phoenix has gone from a population of about 100,000 in the late 50's to about 4 million in the metro area today. The vast majority having migrated here from somewhere else.
