On reflection its odd, isnt it?
In everyday life when we communicate face to face humans almost never need moderators. Maybe people are just naturally more civil when they are standing nose to nose with someone they are talking to.
But on the internet we need a moderator to stop some people from becoming so abusive, rude and incivil that they provoke a storm of invective in response.
I wonder why some people feel so inclined.
I seldom do. When someone disagrees with me my attitude is usually "fair enough" its that persons right to see things differently and I certainly dont assume I am the font of all wisdom and knowledge whose ideas are in some sense privileged over everyone elses. Even when someone is rude to me I prefer to walk away from the thread rather than reply in a way that might end in a MAD ouotcome (Mutually Assured Destruction) Angelic arent I? :angel:
So why is it that some people become provocative. Is it that they are so small minded and insecure that they have to pick an easy mark on the internet (someone who cannot bop them on the nose) to be obnoxious to because this somehow boosts their ego?? Is that it? Cause I dont know.

I think temporary bannings are ok if applied sensibly.
When you suddenly find yourself without access to this place because you've been banned you can do two things ... totally spit your dummy and never darken RFF's doorstep again or wait until your ban is lifted and move on with an attitude that will prevent the process being repeated.
I personally don't think I did enought to deserve the ban I got but that's my problem ... not the establishment's. They make the rules not me and I have to find a way to work within them if I want to continue on here at RFF!

Or your posts might use words that are less extreme than 'insane' and 'misguided.' 🙂
Godfrey edited one of my posts in that same thread, which I found rather ironic, because the part that he edited was a quote...from him. LOL
He took it personally, when the words were meant generally and the overall intent was quite innocuous. After 6 years, the first post of mine that has ever been edited by a mod...and there has been plenty of opportunity, only 32 people have more posts!

Another question that comes to mind for me ... and I regard this as quite important:
If a mod is appointed by management and sufficient members dislike that decision would/should management reverse the appointment if pressed to do so?

we don`t have em here - cultural difference i suppose, and cultural difference is the reason for many of the issues here.
I would bet there has never been an argument on a bag thread..maybe there is a solution in that somewhere😀

Hall moniter = prefect I think. No one liked prefects when I was at school in Wellington. 😀

As I already said in the other thread, you unquestionably were rude. Anyone can go and read it. It boggles the mind how you still don't realize it.
That being said, I did find the "I'll be watching you" on his side a bit problematic (albeit understandeable under the circumstances). It seems to me that there's a conflict of interest when mods use their power to sort out an argument they're personally involved in. In those cases I think another mod who's not involved should be consulted.

Interesting question(s)....but didn't this (these) question(s) arise because someone "left" of their own accord?
Maybe I'm missing the point of this thread... as it pertains to "the big picture" anyway.

they still don`t..Wellington is my home town and all the prefects i knew of were the sons and daughters of crooked lawyers/accountants and marketing gurus...probably still are😀

Where I grew up there's actually no such thing as a hall monitor/prefect, etc. The very idea that there should be someone in the hallway monitoring people's behaviour is utterly foreign to me. What exactly is the point of that?

I have a lot of respect for Godfrey`s experience but I`m afraid that phrase does jar with me.
In todays world of ever present surveillance it has unfortunate Orwellian undertones.
I`m sure that isn`t the intention.
On the wider issues ,whilst its been informative to learn about the workings and machinations of moderating a forum ,I find myself yearning to get back to a lens and bag thread.
The forum would run much smoother if people didn`t introduce their personal politics and into the threads.
I would suggest that the moderators direct their attention to that more.
