The other problem that is faced by no matter who is in the role of CEO, is the Board. If the Board isn't prepared to let go of their 50yo business model it wont really matter who drives the bus. Whatever they do, it needs to be a radical departure from the past and this company just hasn't displayed the stomach for that level of change...

Yes, he has an extremely effective way of getting rid of competitors.
Give him two years as a chief executive, and Leica will be the only camera brand left!

Someone with good access and understanding of Asian, and particularly Chinese, markets. This is where the growth lies over the coming decade.
There are very suitable candidates available if required- the Board just have to look (glad to make some suggestions if requested to do so by them)

Ok....Leica has a Austrian Investor. the Leica people at Solms made that very clear. the new investor is willing to pump 100 million euros into the company. He is also the shadow on why the CEO got moved out. So no matter what happens going forward the CEO will be a figure head for the new "investor". He is also the big reason the, for the lack of a better description....Leica Land. which is a way to create a Leica heritage / cluture center...in Wetzlar. This may be a good or bad idea. I my self am not infavor of spending big buck to do this.
Yes....I agree on 2 very basic things. One we will never really get a "open" look at what the company s going to do. second the investor will call alll the shots. Leica lack any idea of openness. It is a closed culture.
And remember that when I was visiting back in September 07 the Porsche consutlting group had just been in to advise Leica about quality control and other subjects to help improve production. That was a subject that they at Solms were proud to mention.
You hire Jessica Simpson...and get the same resutls at this point. Although the workers would be much happier.
Best Regards....Laurance

I have a couple of friends of Chinese origin, and bought a few items from Hong Kong, do I qualify?

China is the center of the world for "Fake" everything.....maybe they should go back in the business of making fake Leica's.
I can see it know. Retail pricing of $99.95 Sold at Target and Walmart and it could "sync" with I-Pod. And with an accessory package it could work as a "game controller" for both Wii and Playstation 3. Because it has ear buds...it could be a Wi-Fi capable for international cell phone applications. It would be the ultimate Geek accessory.
Of course it would be made almost completely of "lead" and lenses of Plastic. To avoid any copyright issues, advertising catch phrase would be...there nothing like a "LIE HA" I can hardly wait to see the offical release of the chinese " I-Phone"
As the world tries to go down market and out source everything..then end result is a world or crap and plastic disposble everything.
To get and hold the status of "the top brand" at anything you must deliver a value to customers that is without question superior to all else. A CEO can only turn a company around if the boards desire to accomplish this mission and service to it's customer is worth the same.

My Red Dot Glows For You
Given all the suggestons, I nominate Ronald McDonald. It won't matter, for the Leica bashers will try to call anything the beginning of the end of Leica. So, at least do it with somebody that appeals to the kid in them

Dr. Kaufmann is actually German, or at least he was born and raised there. It will be interesting to see what direction they take. It seems like "culture clash" was a primary reason behind Mr. Lee's departure...

That would be one ugly and cumbersome iPhone. I think Steve Jobs would veto anything that's ugly and hard to use.tom.w.bn said:Another vote for steve jobs.

Maybe Putin COULD actually help-look what he did for the LOMO, after all.
Anyway, my vote for a non-exec Chairman would go to (if he has the spare time and inclination) Carlos Ghosn, who completely transformed another perceived basketcase, namely Nissan, under challenging shareholders (Renault).
