My Rff start page is the latest additions to the Gallery. That way I can easily stay somewhat in touch.

Stephen what are your goals and requirements?
Do you want to drive traffic to RFF Salon/Galleries?
Load speed is important, how slow is too slow?
Should this include the sister site (DSLRx)?
Do you want to increase membership?

Best thread I have read here in a while. Memphis will be a great kingpin in this place. Althought, Jon I also miss the random images, maybe we could have random selected images (with at least a couple comments, or some other distinction)... That way we cut down on the personal shots which are not as presentable. THIS IS THE TYPE OF IMPROVEMENT i HAVE BEEN WAITING FOR! I have loved favorites of the week, but am not always able to entertain. I think this is a great idea. -thomas

Cool idea including DSLR site Bill. I like good shots, and that might mix it up a bit. -tg
Thanks to all of those volunteering to work on the Salon projects. Glad to see the support of RFF.

Can we have special forum set up that we can add comments/thoughts to. One that will not be added to the front page? This might use a tool we all know to post comments and ideas for feed back. Everyone who wants to can post a thread and then we can all comment back. Lets do this for a week or two and then you (being a moderator) can pull together a master list for final review. We trash it for another week and then present it to the Chief Bartender.
How does that sound?

Just a comment from the "bleachers"... I came here originally because of the galleries. I didn't even join into the forums for at least 6 months because I wasn't interested in camera equipment.
Since I'm more an "image guy" than an 'equipment guy" I sympathize with the loss of the 'revolving/rotating/random gallery function' however I'm with Stephen on the issue of it causing a slowdown in site performance. I recall too many times when the whole site was interminably slow or even unable to handle the load of the users.
I can wait for a few seconds and do the "random" thing on my own. I'd rather see everyone have fast access at the cost of my having to search for images through the member list.
Initially I went through everyone's gallery start to finish. It might be good to do it again!

it's great to see all of this interest. This call for community action came about when I realized the mods and myself did not have the the time to promote the existing monthly salon and 10 best pics.
the goal is to make RFF a better site. After that, traffic will take care of itself. I am aiming for more image promotion and emphasis within RFF -- but without taking anything away from the gear heads. Ideally I want us to add to the site's versatility and usefulness.
Exactly how to do it, when, and in what order, needs to take some thought instead of just making changes from the get go. Changes that prove successful at RFF can also be made at DSLR.
On Bill's suggestion, there is a new forum to discuss these changes, to be led by the volunteers on this task, but open to all members. Remember that we are limited to the existing shape and function of the forum. Don't waste time on suggesting massive programming changes to the software.
The new forum to discuss imagery ideas is RFF Imagery Promo

Deciding what to try is just the first step. After that we need to see what works, and how to keep it working!

PS: anyone notice the new Leica CL forum yet?

The wonderful thing about the web is you can link your pages together any way you want, even put pages on other servers. You might have two different types of start pages, one for the folks who like salons and contest, another for the folks who like discussions. Each one has a single toggle button to move you to the other. In a perfect world you could choose if you want a new window or go there in the current that you can set up in the user profile.
On the Salons, Galleries side we need to have some contests and perhaps publize them on both sides. We can do the same topic in the DSLR forum too (e.g. What Is It?).

Stephen,
I'm trying to cut back on GEAR/GAS. Having a bad attack of NAS for a digital to go with my beautiful S3 2000!
I have to look though as the CL is one of those cameras I've always lusted for.

random front page images translate into a terribly slow site.
we have tried it, it does not work.
Stephen
If the front page thing won't work, how about a "back page" of random photos linked through the gallery? Is it images in general (i.e. the new uploads in the gallery) that slow things down, or is it the "randomness"?
So many great pictures here, some 5 years old, from people who are long gone, buried, never ever to be seen unless through an archeological member gallery dig.
As others said, it is (it was) unique to here, it's what brought me here, etc.

That´s a great idea.
I admit that I´m a little bit lazy. I do have a scanner for 5 or 6 months but scanning hasn´t become one of my favourite activities. So that´s the main reason I haven´t contributed pictures so far. But I do look at the galleries nearly every day when I visit rff.
One thought and one question: what makes members with outstsanding pictures leave rff and post them on - for example - flickr ? Is there more traffic? Is it easier to post on flickr? For I have no idea how it works, it´s meant as a serious question.

My 2 cents: Instead a random image at the start would it be possible to include a set of thumbnailed random images in the same way the "featured ads"? This way the paga layout would not change and only a third row of "featured pics from our galleries" will be added.

i would be glad to help but i dont fully understand what would be our job. maybe i could continue organizing stuff like fsu contest. maybe i could expand it to other groups (so we could have leica competition, zeiss competition, bessa etc...) like someone proposed in this thread http://www.rangefinderforum.com/forums/showthread.php?p=663623#post663623
i just need one gallery for each contest.

I would like to bring to your attention in this thread a post Marek just posted in the "new beginning"-thread:
"My suggestion is simple: make a "plugin" loader applet, akin that used by flickr, with which one can load up reasonably sized (at least 1200x800 pixel) jpegs smoothly and directly into a specific set in the gallery. I load up 25-30 shots a month on flickr on average, and with all the time it takes to scan and edit the photos I hate to think I would have to upload each photo manually. If you cannot do this, forget the individual galleries altogether, and make exclusively a monthly contest in a few categories, where one can submit only one shot, this way you will end up attracting best photographs and biggest interest without much IT investment."
If this is right - as I said I don´t know anything about it - it might be one of the reasons why rff is not that picture-related. Can you change this with reasonable efforts, Steven and Jorge?
