I was walking along, minding my own business, when I hear the tiny chime of light-weight metal bouncing on concrete. I look down, and the ID ring on my 50mm Summicron has come off.

I see it is threaded, so I understand "How" it came off, but "why" did it come off?

It kind off drops back into place, so it doesn't thread on the whole way in, but what is the best way to screw it in so that it doesn't work its way out again? It does not have any slots for any special tools, it looks like it just needs to go in finger tight.

How do I get it tight w/o worry of messing up the glass? And how would someone (a technician) get it off if I were to get it on there tight?

Repairmen use a special rubber tool to screw and unscrew it.

Try screwing it on fairly snug and then take some clear nail polish and place it around the edge with a toothpick. This should keep it on and will be easy to remove by a tech

A tech would likely use a rubber coated tool that would touch only the ring and not the glass. Try putting a tiny drop or two of clear nail polish on the ring, let it set for a few seconds, then screw it on finger tight. Do not get any nail polish on the lens!
