Why digital?

So, Leica is bringing out a new, innovative digital camera system. The M8 continues to get mixed reviews, though mostly positive now that some of the early firmware glitches have been corrected. The most successful camera in the history of Canon is the digital Rebel. At the same time this board gushes with effusive praise for the all manual Leica MP. I know digital is here to stay, and it is only going to get better with time. So my question is, right now, what advantages does digital really offer?

Partly due to the simple, intuitive interface, and not just a film vs. digital issue. It's why the R-D1 is so beloved, despite its dated specs.

The simple answer is fast turnaround. Pros can deliver their images to editors faster, editors can publish them faster. Very important for newspapers but also online publishing.
This has trickled down and morphed into the consumer's need to "see it right away" so they can tell if they've made a good shot. It also means easier sharing of photos for many people. Photo sharing sites and emailing have largely replaced the photo album.
I can see why people like it but it's not for everybody. I still cringe when I see some guy flogging his perfectly good old 35mm gear because he assumes he "has to go digital". I prefer to work mostly in film for a number of reasons but I keep a digital handy for convenience.
