Why I chose the SD1M over an M9.

I´m a fan of sigma products, i own a dp2m and just can´t imagine selling it....also i use and feel the same about my m9!

I´m sure Keith has made the correct decision and knowing the sigma foveon is believing!!!

I hope for a dpm with a slow zoom...just all i hope for!

😀

How does the sigma sensor compare to the MM?

MM pros
- 18 million photo sites vs 15 million
- no Bayer array or aa means each photo site is interpreting the light in terms of a pure light strength value from 0 to 255. In a way similar to how b&w film would handle it
- no Bayer array means no guessing (Bayer algo and interpretations) on what the real color should be associated w/ the neighbor photo site or where true edge delineation is.
- better high iso
- full frame sensor
MM cons
- monochrome only
- need b&w filters to change emphasize just like real film (ie. Yellow, green, etc)

Sigma foveon pros
- each of the 15 million photo sites can handle all three primary colors
- no aa and no Bayer or xtran array means no need to interpret reality of true edge or color
- raw file retains all color info even if monochrome mode is used. This mode only sets a mono flag in the raw file for spp sw to use.
--- The choice of color or mono is retained for post processing
--- use of b&w filters is not required up front and can be a post processing option
- better tonal range then any Bayer array design
- tonal range probably as good as MM
- sd1 family, extremely wide range of Sigma lenses. The new art lenses leading the charge for good optics, performance and quality compared to the lenses designed even 3-5 years ago.
Foveon cons
- apsc vs ff
- sigma lenses only
-- unless u go the special mount replacement for Nikon lenses at expense of loosing af on the sd family.
- slow af focus about Fuji x100 speed prior to latest fw update for dp family and Nikon d200 or 300 af speed for the sd1m even though it is a true phase detect setup.
- Sd1m manual focus option much better than dp family though but focus screen is simple ground glass
- at each photo site, each color sensor is stacked on top of each other w/ blue at top and red at bottom, thus as iso gets higher true color accuracy decreases and noise increases.
- color good to around 400, ok at 800.. Noise starts to become issue by this time due to need to amplify red channel signal more vs blue channel.
- monochrome is good to 800 and ok up to 1600 w/ any special processing.
-- use of favoring info in the blue channel in post processing can increase acceptable iso up around 3200 or so.
- some weird color behavior at times when the sky is the theme. I suspect the blue channel (top location in each photo site) is being overloaded and is bleeding info into other color channels.
--- No such issue when in monochrome mode that I have been able to detect

If u are looking at this from purely resolution perspective, MM should be better (18 million photo sites vs 15 million to record monochrome info), but there are so many other aspects here.

Since I don't own any Leica digital m, all I can say is that the MM was the only digital Leica that truly tempted me to buy in.. After shooting w/ the sigma cameras both dp and sd families, that urge has disappeared. If by some miracle though, if the MM were to drop below 2k, I might one day buy one. But this is a big if currently.

Hope this helps to answer your question.

Outside of the MM, I wish Fuji would make a monochrom camera or Fuji so called retro style (back to basics) ethos would find its way to the dp family along w/ a csc type of design.

And I'll publicly take an opportunity to thank you Gary for all the help you've given me with this decision ... much appreciated. 🙂

No problem.. Your welcome. Important thing is I hope u have found the right camera for your needs and u just have fun w/ it.

Actually I've have a SD1M modified as EOS mount to accept more better glasses
However, things have changed a lot, new sigma art series will bring your SD1M much better choices.

Good for you Keith, going through similar exercise myself at present and have decided to get an MM to go with my A7r. Sony for colour and AF when required and MM for almost everything else. Realise I am mainly digital now and time to embrace it.

I briefly looked at the Sigma SD9 (or 10 or 14) because I learned that they have an easy to remove IR-blocking filter. By removing it, we can shoot IR images.

I wonder if this remains with the SD1M.

Yep still there.. But the issue relates to phase detection af. Ir wavelength is different, so if u try to focus w/ a ir filter like a 720nm, it will be out of focus. The work around is to af focus normally and then put the 720nm filter on the lens. The ir filters are so dark that normal manual focus is extremely hard.

Thus u will end up using it as a full spectrum camera or go thru this work around. The other issue is related to stacking of the three color channels over the same photo site. I have been told by others, ir results may not be as good.

Given the workaround issue, I never tried removing the ir/dust filter. I have seen the work of people who have, to me, it is good enough for my needs, but I am basically a lazy person.

Keith,
I am glad to hear that you are getting an SDM1. It is my primary camera now.
Consider getting the Sigma 18-35mm f/1.8 lens. I know you prefer primes but this zoom lens is terrific. I bought the 50mm prime but I didn't like it. Since then Sigma has come out with a new one - it should be better. Consider the 85mm f/1.4 - fantastic lens. of course, the Sigma 35mm f/1.4 lens is also amazing.
Enjoy!
Eric

Got the camera today ... it was delivered to work and I finally got a chance to unpack it and have a looksee at lunch time.

Damn! Beautifully made, extremely light for a DSLR and the ergonomics may just be the best of any camera I've ever held. It fits the hand like a glove!

PITA that I won't have a lens for at least another week! 😛

Oh, that must be painful! How about pinhole for awhile? 🙂

I realize Sigma isn't for everyone but if it grabs it does it well. Oh, should charge battery for DP1...

If you don't mind judsonzhao can you tell me more? Where did you get it done? How much did it cost? Thanks

Charged the battery and have been having a look throught the menus, setting the date and time etc. Most of the controls are exactly where they should be and no top LCD. Like the DPMs it's very basic ... unlike the D700! I haven't bothered to look in the manual ... it's all pretty well self explanatory. 🙂

The shutter sound is interesting ... more of a muted 'thump' and very quiet. 🙂

Oh ... and like the DPMs it came in a very low rent white box with 'Sigma SD1 Merrill' marked tastefully on it and not much more. Great company ... no bullsh!t here!
